I was trying to record some vocals in Wavelab but when I turn on monitoring I get a slight delay in my headphones only, I've tried to use the offset option but it doesn't appear to make any difference. I have a direct monitor knob on my Air 4 but I really need to hear the background track.
Out of interest I tried different software and the issue continues so I assume it's an issue somewhere in the system, is there anything I can change in order to stop this latency problem? I'm on an M2 Mini running Sonoma.

Wavelab monitoring is Software monitoring. This has to pass AD + DA converters, and thus has latency. The "adjust" feature will shift the backing track accordingly, but it cannot shift things back in time. True time travel is not invented yet.
With "air 4" I hope you mean M-Audio Air 192|4 ?
That monitoring is Hardware monitoring, so input directly goes to output. You should be able to mix it with DAW (Wavelab) output. Best is to not mix in the mic channel in your DAW, because then you get the mic signal twice: with and without latency.
If you need some reverb, it can be added. With latency, so keep it 100% wet signal. If you need EQ or compression: sorry, no go.

It is the M-Audio deceive you mentioned . I don't really see a way round it so I guess I'm going to have to just have the monitor knob set to half way and turn off software monitor.
Oddly enough I setup my old M-Audio M-Track and everything works perfectly, I can even directly monitor and listen to the backing track!
