Stereo width - is it relative stacking?

I am trying to produce my score, but I am getting confused.
I have 3 racks for the sequences (for example: cello, viola, violin). I set these at 40% stereo width.
Next, I direct the output of these 3 racks to an another rack ('amplifier strings'). This rack contains the MuTools audio processor module 'amplifier'. On its track, I select gain as automation type and stereo width as sub-automation track.
This is the second stereo-width knob.
Next, the output of the amplifier rack is directed to the Master Output. This output also has a default stereo widening knob. This is the third stereo-width knob.
By now, I am at a loss.
For example: each instrument is set at 40% width. The second knob (on the amplifier) is at 100%. Is the end result then 40% or 100% width? And can the same be applied for the 3rd (master) knob?
And does the same principle applies for panning?

Sounds like you’re taking about a piece of software that I’m not too familiar with, not sure what these racks are.
To me though, 100% means what comes in goes out, no changes - any lower than 100% should be narrower and higher should be wider. It’s easy to check by changing the routing and you can hear if the width changes, it shouldn’t.

When I test it, it doesn't work the way I want it. It seems the stereo width knob on the master output rack defines the width and everything that it changed before that is overruled.
The goniometer is showing any change at all, whatever width I set, but I clearly hear the difference.
