I need to delay the onset of a delay signal, so for one second after triggering the delay there's no delay, then the delay kicks in.

So far I've found only one plug that does this, I'm using the matrix of MFM2 from U-he.

Does anyone know of delay plugs which really explore this territory?

Recirculate by Newfangled Audio allows you to have a "First echo" separate to the repeat echos.

If I were you, I would duplicate the track, offset it by 1 second and set the delay on the track to 100% wet and use the duplicated track as a send track.
Not an answer to your question, but a way to achieve your goal

PSP 285 has a 'pre-delay'
AAS Objeq Delay has a separate initial delay knob and the usual repeats after...
Nembrini's Shimmer Delay has a 'swell' function i think does something similar?
I know there are a few others, i can't think off the top of my head.

Just use a 2 delay plugin instances on an FX bus..?

Post

Blue Cat's Late Replies can do it. Even more, you can load a delay (or any other VST effect) in the feedback loop, including itself.

Assuming you're using the delay as a send effect, couldn't you just put another delay (set to one second, 100% wet, no feedback) before the actual delay on the aux (return) track?

edit: this from above, missed it, sorry

Gonna investigate PSP285 and Objeq, also Recirculate which I really love.

Late Replies looks powerful but also expensive.

Put an additional delay (effect ) in front of the delay

This is really easy to do in Kilohearts Snap Heap with their 2 free delay Snap-Ins.

And D16 Sigmund has a pre-delay* function.

*that's basically the feature you are looking for: delay plugins that offer a pre-delay/time function.

Oh, and almost forgot to mention: some plugins allow to put two delay lines in serial mode, so then can use the first one as pre-delay by turning its feedback to zero.

THIS is exactly what you need:

.. and if you for some reason need it to happen the other way, taking away a second, then this:

https://www.voxengo.com/product/latencydelay/

Both are free plugins and absolutely necessary in any serious audio engineer's toolbox.

??

Voxengo's sound delay is exactly what OP needs to solve his problem. It allows you to set exact delay for something.. in milliseconds, "meters" and "feet". So it's extremely good at setting an exact 1 second delay for his delay aux to kick off. It does one single task and does it extremely well.

I personally use it all the time to align tracks, give some "pre-delay" to various aux sends (it's great for pre-delaying choruses, phasers, flangers, delays, reverbs etc).

.. and the latency delay counterpart does the exact same thing, except it does it in the opposite time direction.

It's a precision tool for a very precise task. It's very easy to setup and takes pretty much zero CPU resources and is as lean as a plugin can be.
