My first (and only) hardware compressor arrived last week.

It’s a special edition of SSL G buss comp clone they make (St Patty’s version), with a 120hz internal side chain filter instead of the standard 160hz, plus dual mono/stereo switch, plus an external side chain (only works in stereo mode). And green knobs and power, etc.

Why get a compressor? Well, I found my analog hardware saturation box with mid-side mode made it extremely fast and easy to get that “finished” sound on the mixbuss, so why not try something more?

So far, it has an “effortless” sound and takes almost no time to dial in pleasingly. I wish it could better eat transients, so very pokey sounds need a little treatment (eg Transgressor 3) before hitting the G when using it as a track compressor. But it does that magic SSL thing on the mixbuss as one would expect.
