Audio Damage Enso - why not just use a slicer / record your loop and warp in DAW?

hi guys, i saw in some streams ENSO and i didnt demo the plugin myself yet but im wondering what im missing here. it is a looper ok, and you can play slices later too ok.
but why should you use this looper? problem is if you are not recording perfect timings you can get timing probs in a session, i record my loops in my daw and correct the issues in the DAW then and then loop my clip. i can also chop my audio clip or use a slicer.
both i can do with more processing abilities etc. than ENSO?
or whats the special deal with enso? when would you use it at all?
thanks

so you're not doing live looping. which is basically what this plugin (and most looper plugins) is for.Caine123 wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 9:00 am but why should you use this looper? problem is if you are not recording perfect timings you can get timing probs in a session, i record my loops in my daw and correct the issues in the DAW then and then loop my clip. i can also chop my audio clip or use a slicer.
there's your big clue.

I have and use Enso, but it may be regarded as more of a misuse. Setting it in "destructive" mode, with feedback at about 85%, I will build up a complex drone/base layer sound over several passes using two or three different instruments. In that particular use-case I find it really quick and easy to use.

I tried it long ago and it seemed very clicky when looping - did not cross fade or clean up joins. Is that still the case?avid_d wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 12:11 pm I have and use Enso, but it may be regarded as more of a misuse. There are fader options within the UI for cross fading between the different sectors. I simply do not use it that way, so cannot say how well they work.sandandpaint wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 12:41 pm

For my purposes, I never start or end on a beat, I only record with a single 360 degree sector and always build with a sustained note across from a loop end to the next pass. That method works well for me and gives a perfectly useable result but will not be what most people want a looper for.
The most frequent bug I have encountered is the recording dot not moving, even though it is recording. I have found no pattern to explain why this sometimes happens.

I think you’re missing the point of what Enso and other audio loopers like it are trying to do. They’re not so much about just recording and using loops for your track, but more for live looping as a musical technique. This is a pretty old technique that used to use reel to reel tape decks, and was made popular by artists like Brian Eno and Robert Fripp.
This isn’t me, but I used to to a lot of shows that used this exact technique.

thanks a lot guys!
thanks also to you zerocrossing, i get it now i think? well i guess in the past you had not these fancy DAWs, but i think if i just loop a sequence in my DAW it is no different? + add maybe an automation where for example a delay is blended step by step and also a saturator, then this should be a samey effect as ENSO i guess.zerocrossing wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 3:52 pm I think you’re missing the point of what Enso and other audio loopers like it are trying to do. I think the mistake you’re making is you’re talking about the finished product and I’m talking about the process. Sure, there are a thousand ways to end up with something that sounds like what that guy is doing with the Echoplexes. You may not care about the process, but I find it a really fun way to make music. Why not grab a demo and try? The key is to get the transport controls set up to respond to MIDI control so you can just play and open and close your loop at various points and manipulate the speed. One thing that Enso does which I’m pretty sure nothing else does is go from positive speed changes to negative, all the way down to backwards speeds. Fun for interesting ambient textures and other stuff.Caine123 wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 7:51 pm thanks a lot guys!

audio damages delay "other desert cities" has this implemented too in the mirage and cactus algorithm. you can choose differents speeds for the right and left delay feedback and modulate it via lfos. its really great and one of my most fun ways for crazy sound designing!zerocrossing wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 11:22 pm One thing that Enso does which I’m pretty sure nothing else does is go from positive speed changes to negative, all the way down to backwards speeds. i set to 100% wet, go mad and record as audio -> perfect material to edit further.
