I've come across several plugins that feature a single knob width control, and many of them advertise being mono-compatible. I'm curious to know exactly what these width controls are doing under the hood.
Plugins like bx_control, Boz Width Knob, Polyverse Wider, certain Safari Plugins (like Flamingo Verb) have this.
Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I don't know the specifics of any of the plugins mentioned, but they very likely work as follows. Concert the L/R signal to M/S (mid/side). For less width, boost mid and reduce side; more width, boost side and reduce mid. Convert M/S back to L/R. This should be fully mono-compatible.

Added thought: by mono-compatible I mean no unwanted phase cancellations happening. I do not mean that you can play it back as mono and it will sound like the original if you have altered the level of the side signal.
