Hi everyone,

I’m doing some research for university and would love your thoughts:

Do you feel there’s a lack of variety or quality in stems, loops, or samples?

Would access to full stems (e.g., separate drums, bass, vocals) instead of loops/ samples improve your workflow? Particularly if you could choose any song stems?

What’s harder to balance—quality or affordability when sourcing sounds?

Any insights on anything else I haven't covered would be super helpful!

Cheers,

Han Han Han.

What’s Holding Back Your Recording Sessions?

Absolutely nothing.

I don't even use samples all that much that I didn't record myself. Loops/stems/etc. have zero appeal for me.

No disrespect for people who take that kind of thing as raw material to be pulled apart and create something truly new, but anyone who can do that well already has a wealth of material all around them anyway.

Then you might consider collecting quantitative data and providing us context for your research, instead of asking questions that sound like the kind of market research that every other blogger or youtuber or AI startup does here

I’m doing some research for university...

Unlikely.

I'd say you are from a small company that makes samples and are doing market research for your next project.

Access to full stems means you are not recording anything so you can't have a recording session

It's like throwing some hot water in a cup to make instant ramen cup o noodles and asking if you are a 5 star chef

A truly flexible, multitrack polyphonic sequencer that allows a variety of note durations for at least 32 steps and shows the different sequences on different tracks on one page for easy viewing of polyrhythms being created. Maybe this is already available, but I haven't seen it. DAWs come closest, but....

I'm trying to answer the original general question. As for sounds, it seems to me anything that can possibly be sampled has been sampled very well and made available through many libraries. There are lots of free ones that are good, although some professional sample libraries offer better quality and flexibility.... I've never played with stems, so don't know about these.

I do not need to disclose personal details. People can be so rude. I am just doing research. And for the record - i am a girl. God i forgot how bitter old musicians are.

working with stems is like having (hopefully talented) session musicians.
that's all i want to say about that LOL

I think the market for samples (in the sense that you have chunks of music that you didn't write that you can then build something new from).
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

But ageism is ok?

Post

what difference does it make? I don't live in a facist state, nor do I have to disclose. Trolling people for the sake of trolling just shows how you have too much time on your hands. Honestly, get a life. I am researching and I am not obliged to disclose my university.

We are not obliged to give you any info either.

Of course, you are entitled to present yourself however you wish to. I apologize for the rudeness you are encountering here. It might help if you gave some specifics on what you are trying to find out, and for what purpose. Are you mostly just interested in the use of stems by DJs? Is the university you represent interested in providing musicians with useful tools? Or are you conducting a sort of focus-group discussion as, say, a marketing course exercise?

Questioning someone's name strikes me as kind of childish. Nobody needs to present bona fides to ask our "thoughts".
What do you think, OP is telling the truth or lying?
1) I think the OP is telling the truth.
2) If she were lying, what would she stand to gain? Plugin developers ask people like us for input all the time. Do you think she wants our opinions for some nefarious purposes? What the hell is someone going to do with my thoughts on the usefulness of stems?

I feel sorry for the OP that she decided to dip her toe into this pool and it turned out to be icy and polluted.
