I've always really enjoyed the sound and workflow of Etch https://www.fxpansion.com/products/etch/ - but unfortunately it's no longer maintained and while it still works fine (on my PC at least) I'm wondering if there is anything similar that is modern and maintained - preferably something that also plays nicely with Apple Silicone. Looking for something in the same ballpark - 2 filters, a good modulation system that is easy to dial in, distortion and compression options all in the one plug.

As already mentioned, Polyverse Music’s Filterverse really is worth looking at. I’m blown away by all of their effects, and this filter is incredibly diverse and useful. Give it a go!

Indeed The Drop.

Andy from Cytomic was formerly Andy from Fxpansion and the filters in Etch are some of his less detailed models. The Drop has some of the best plugin filters anywhere.

If you value analog tone, and smooth audio rate modulation, then The Drop is a good choice. Since all modulation is done at audio rate this means you can use the envelope followers as compressors either by modulating the pre or post gain. The modulation options a fewer, but the results will be smoother. It has two audio rate LFOs that have swing and stereo offset (one sine, one step sequence based with variable exp / linear / inverse exp slope), two analog modelled envelope followers (based on a modified Moog Taurus envelope), key track from midi as well as midi triggering of Envs / LFOs. Any modulation you want to do past that you have to use "control rate" DAW based automation or modulation sources (ie slow and stepped) that change any plugin parameters you want - so there are not presets for this. There are 10 circuits modelled, and each one has a unique distortion characteristic, and you can open up the filter cutoff if you want regular distortion. There is the regular oversampling options from all Cytomic plugins of up to x16 for realtime and x64 offline render, and you can automatically switch between the two on render. All filters self oscillate and have feature all major non-linearities from the original circuits, or custom designed circuits, they are based on. Check youtube for various videos on how accurate the models match various analog circuits.

If you value pre-done modulation based presets, with complicated internal control rate (ie not as smooth) modulation then a filter from U-He or Cable Guys may be better for you. I've tried to make The Drop more like an awesome sounding instrument you play to get the most out of rather than a preset machine where the modulation patterns are done for you.
