Hi friends, I'm looking for a plugin that ages the sound, which one do you recommend I should try? On the other hand, I'm looking for the effect not only because I want to find something cool
, but because some that I've tried, don't stop applying the effect even when the sound where I've inserted it, is no longer playing. Thank you very much for your recommendations!

Yeah, a common issue with many of these plugins is that the tape hum, hiss, noise, etc is always present and that’s not always the desired effect (e.g., when you only want it on the vocals). Usually, the best solution is to put a gate plugin right after it.Transfigurationsofbeing wrote: Sun Feb 23, 2025 12:07 am ….but because some that I've tried, don't stop applying the effect even when the sound where I've inserted it, is no longer playing. Hiss etc being permanent represents the real world as electronics hisses all the time that it is on. It is electrons doing the electricity thing. That is vintage and when done nicely adds real presence.
If you don't want any or all devices hissing away like Satanic asps, simply use a Gate. Again this is how vintage works. Plenty of old records you can hear gates opening and closing.
The video Mr Snake Oil just posted on the new Hornet Overtones thing at times sounded very vintage-distorty. Seems a bit unready perhaps. I do like and still occasionally use the Hornet Analog Stage but the older version as I did not dig the new one. His new stuff seems to have issues.
Again older, but this tape unit has a slightly different charm and the presets are actually useful as a this, or this, or this thing.
Most of the vintage-izers make things sound silly with all kinds of warble and distortion of a style that was never there in real recordings. That makes them a modernizer (or Hipsterizer) which is what most are really after.

Yes, I think there are a lot of vintage-izer plugins that are pretty over-the-top, or at least many of their presets and demo songs display this side. In my experience and opinion, subtlety is key, as is adding various aspects of the vintage sound in stages or layers.Benedict wrote: Sun Feb 23, 2025 4:57 am Most of the vintage-izers make things sound silly with all kinds of warble and distortion of a style that was never there in real recordings. Could you be more specific? There a quite a few plugins available that can age your sound in various ways. Do you want studio quality sound from a certain era or do you want to make it sound very lofi like dusty vinyl recorded onto worn tape played back through tiny speakers for example?Transfigurationsofbeing wrote: Sun Feb 23, 2025 12:07 am I'm looking for a plugin that ages the sound

Not sure if you're a Reason user, but Needle from Dusty Devices is by far the most authentic-sounding vinyl simulator. I recommend keeping an eye on them for future releases, I heard rumors that more lofi processors are in the pipeline!

Before you spend your cash, at least try the free and in my view pretty good BPB Dirty VHS
The golden mode often does it for me. Free and quite a lot of features :

Try Bandbreite it's a free plugin made by a former NI developer who went independent.
It’s an amazing plugin, and I actually wanted to write a separate post about it.
Other plugins I love that don’t require a separate gate are RC-20 and Reels, as they both have Envelope Follow for noise.
I also love Ghz, Sketch Cassette, Arturia Mello-Fi & J37, but they do need a gate after the noise
