Greetings. I am travelling the world on a motorcycle. I have a guitar with me, and an audio interface and am recording an album as I ride. Due to weight and room constraints, I cannot carry a keyboard, but I do have an iPad. Geoshred looks awesome as a controller, and I use both Reaper and Fl Studio on my PC. It must be 5 different times I've looked to see how I can use the iPad and get MIDI and or audio into my PC from the iPad using only a USB C cable. Taking a look at Sonobus. But there MUST be a way for this to work. Can anyone here help?

Thanks.

No, there's really no reliable way to do what you're asking as far as I know. You need a small audio interface with MIDI connected via the CCK dongle (or just a MIDI interface if you don't care about audio - that would be smaller). Or get a Mac.

Never heard of sonobus.

Buy yourself 2 USB to MIDI adapter cables and connect them in reverse

What's a CCK dongle. Not getting a MAC. Thanks for the reply. rtpMIDI works but terrible latency. Need a cable. I do have a 2x2 MIDI device with me. And just bought a USB C to MIDI cable. My wife will deliver it in a few weeks. If I can get other ipad apps working without latency this way, I'll take a good look at geoshred again. On a strictly theoretical level, MIDI over a USB C cable should work.

I know that. CCK = Camera Connection Kit.

The iPad seems to have only an 8-pin "lightning" connector. The CCK allows you to connect something over usual USB (while also being able to charge it.) Also I've read that no-brand CCK's are all but reliable. Only originals by Apple are guaranteed to work. So visit the next Apple store to sort you out.

maybe it's not really clear what kind of connection the iPad has?:
32pin (very old), lightning or usb-c ?

Getting Windows and Apple to work together is an exercise in frustration...

GeoShred on iPad produces MIDI
-> CCK (iPad USB adapter)
-> USB Midi device (out port)
-> MIDI cable (5-pin DIN)
-> USB Midi device (in port)
-> DAW on PC consumes MIDI

You might need a 5-pin DIN female-female adapter if both the USB Midi devices have a cord with a male plug instead of a female connector in which you'd plug the MIDI cable.

I have a definitive answer finally. USB C to USB C will not work because BOTH devices are hosts. You cannot communicate host to host. I have ordered a USB C cable to 5 pin DIN. In fact 2 of them just in case. I can then use my MIDIPLUS 2x2 to get MIDI into the PC. Thanks for all the posts. My wife is coming to visit here in Uruguay in a few weeks and will bring me the cables.

Peace.

There are NO Apple stores in South America. There are stores that sell Apple, but not an actual Apple store. Imagine that. Bogota, Lima, Montevideo, Buenos Aires - nadda.

Camera connection kit. USBC (or a lightning version if you have an older device) and USB port. Stick with the expensive Apple version not the knock offs.

I use that into a separate audio interface that then is wired into my main audio interface. Works perfectly well and is reliable. Clearly not practical for you right now.
