I just use the daw or kontakt to combine existing sounds. For making things everything is great for sfx but Convolution combined with a Mic is one of the best. Also resampling (changing speed and pitch by changing sample rate). This can be done in tons of ways.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

My definition of SFX may be different than yours. So for clarification, are you referring to assets or recordings made for film that require editing and mixing in post? Or are you talking about completely synthesized sounds and “ear-candy,” which is usually generated through sampling and synthesis, and is often used in dance music, video games, and in films?
I use both recorded elements and completely synthesized ones in my own work. For recordings made in the real world, a powerful editing tool such as iZotope’s RX 11 Advanced is a huge time saver. I consider it a must have for surgical repairs and enhancements. It’s also an excellent creative tool as well.
I only wish that iZotope would re-release their Iris synthesizer with RX 11’s processing features. That would be so off the chain! Both spectral and granular VST’s play a big role in the types of sounds that I enjoy making. There was a recent update to accSone’s Crusher-X 10 to 11, and in my opinion, it currently reigns supreme in the world of granular effects.
I also have great respect for Zynaptiq, Devious Machines, Boom Library, Polyverse Music, Eventide, GRM Tools, Minimal Audio, GS DSP, Anemond, Glitchmachines, SoundMorph, Lunacy Audio, Ircam, Kilohearts, Dawesome, and so many other fantastic developers. They all make critical plug-ins that I use to push the boundaries of the sounds that I design. Whether you’re looking for an instrument or an effect, those would be great developers to look at.
