Tyrell Nexus 6

Post

Hello fellow replicants,

as you might know, the current TyrellN6 version has long surpassed the lifespan of a typical Nexus-6 replicant. But don't worry, we found a way to extend its life support, so it won't be lost like tears in the rain.

Since we are concentrating on Uhbik 2.0 and Zebra 3.0 this year, we couldn't churn out a full-fledged update right now. Instead, we simply fixed some crucial bugs, added our modern browser and a makeshift preferences section. But don't expect new features or a new GUI. There is no fancy MIDI learn section, no MPE support, and the CLAP version does not include per voice parameter modulation.

Viktor invested a lot of time to completely revamp the factory library. Windows and Linux users, it's better to manually delete the old factory library before installing the update, so you don't end up with a total mess.

We'll soon start hosting this beta version on our website.

You can download the current beta, revision 16976, directly from the product page:

TyrellN6 product page

Please let us know if it runs reliably on all systems.

Enjoy,
the u-he crew (who are all humans, not replicants, as far as we know)

Some skin job glitches when going from Plugmon's Mona skin to other skins. Not sure if the issue lives in Plugmon's skin, or just something about changing skins being buggy, or some combo of the two.

After all these years, third party skins might need some tweaks here and there...

Still one of the greatest, forever a classic

So using the Mona skin only seems to work ok though?

Thanks for this update U-He, much appreciated!

Post

Yeah, it seems like any one skin will work, including Mona, but changing from Mona to another skin causes glitches.

New browser works with Mona? Or it has it's own?

Edit: Looks like Mona has it's own, but hopefully the factory folders are still available.

This issue looks like a regression.

The Default skin value is not being honored. Saving a new default preset in the DAW seems to work as a workaround.

The new browser has additional widgets and parameters. I'm not sure how many of the new features are available without an update to third party skins.

That said, IIRC the "old" browser will just work, and I think there'll be plenty of alternative skins that will eventually be updated.

Yeah the Mona skin will need to be updated with new browser features...

It might be interesting for folks here to recall how we got here.

So, after Amazona announced that they would "replace" or "supersede" Tyrell N6 with a sample-based synth called "Babylon" (?), both Amazona and us agreed to bring Tyrell back to u-he, so we could provide updates and possibly a Pro version. This happened something like 5 or so years ago. However, as far as I can tell their Babylon never emerged, and we weren't sure where things were headed.

At the same time, 5 or so years ago, maybe 2019, we decided to "update everything" with proper VST3 support, AAX and all the good stuff we had done in the years post 2015 (in or around 2015 we also updated everything, but that was before certain hosts broke VST3). It took us friggin 5 years and a new plug-in format to do that. We pretty much have everything, from freeware to Diva up to date now, and Uhbik 2.0 will follow soon-ish.

Tyrell N6 is the last product in urgent need of updating, so we're putting it on much required life support (beta-for-a-while) until Uhbik is done, and depending how much time we can spare from Z3 development. There are always periods of idle time for individual developers and designers, we might use some of those to work on Tyrell's future.

#---

As to where we're going from here, we need to go back even further. So the original idea behind Tyrell was that Amazona had this synth community idea, and it was like 90% identical to where I was in Diva development at the time (2009 or so?). It took me a week back then to align the feature set with what they had in mind, less the sequencer they wanted and some far out things I wouldn't have known how to do. In my mind, I expected Tyrell to become a lite version of Diva, much like what Zebralette is to Zebra or Podolski to FilterscapeVA. But of course, more than two more years went into Diva development, and not much sonic overlap is left between Tyrell and her.

Anyhow, the original concept was that Amazona would provide UI and user guide. Unfortunately that didn't pan out schedule-wise until much later. I did the initial Tyrell N6 1.0 UI myself, and we released without a user guide. In later versions, Amazona-made UIs were added (first a weird one, then the current one), and a feature description was provided (not sure if that's still there) to act as a minimal user guide.

So now that we're bringing Tyrell back home, we'll add a proper user guide, and we will eventually provide a new UI, along with properly curated presets and all that.

Maybe - and that is a big maybe - one day we will add a Pro version (not an XL!) that then would be a little closer to that Diva Lite I had anticipated. One that fills the gap in our portfolio for a low cost, easy feature, Diva-sound soft synth.

We'll see...

Post

Honestly, I'm not even sure what a Pro version "needs" (and I use that word very loosely). Bring it up to par with the others as planned (new GUI, MPE some day, Microtuning) when you can then stick a Lyrebird and Drench module on it and call it done. I think it already does what you set out to in creating a smaller, Diva-esque, synth. But if there's other stuff you have in mind to improve it, don't let me talk you out of it!

Post

Yeah, it would exactly need Lyrebird and Drench. It also needs the voice management in ACE/Bazille/Diva/Hive which steals voices in a nicer way than anything else I know (set Hive to 4 voices, hold a chord with your left hand, play a melody with your right hand, observe how the chord always persists while most other synths drop a note or two).

I would also add less aliasing distortion (mixer, filter), better oscillator bandlimiting, and possibly some better filter in the first place, based on modern analogue modelling as opposed to my early steps back then.

Post

Ah, finally! Thanks u-he, and also for the hard work of tagging all those presets...

On the new Tyrell, MONA N6 currently functions in an old browser state without tags. It needs an update to support the tag browser but it should be a quick and easy task—I'll just bring in the MONA code and adjusting the width and height, and it'll be done.

This is not an issue with either skin, but rather an unavoidable behavior to some extent—It's an issue that stems from things like variable names, default color values, and how fallbacks are handled when values are unspecified, etc. Honestly, I don't see this as a big problem... because it will never occur as long as you continue using my skin! :hihi:
Anyway, this issue may arise from the interaction between any two skins, so it's not something I can resolve with just my efforts, nor just by u-he side. (That said, I do know the cause of the issue where the voice stack number remains, so I’ll fix that.)
