Software Hoarding

Hadn't thought of it that way before, but I guess that's what I (and many others) have been doing.
Got so much software that if it was all hardware, I'd have to store it in a warehouse.
If I had it all in my house, I wouldn't be able to move around,
and most of it would be buried and dusty.
Getting software sometimes seems more important than actually using it.
Not looking for solutions, just looking at it with a different perspective.

sell what you don't use if you are able to. having everything doesn't make you a better musician, being good at a few select things is much better.
Everyone wants to be a hero, nobody wants to carry the hero's sword LOL
I still have scars on my hands from razor blades and splicing muti track tape together.

Well, honestly, compare your GAS with your daily supermarket expense (much more expensive)... Even if you bought stuff you don't actually need or use, plugins are creative tools and very unlike the common capitalistic throw-away product. Just try to use it as a tool. Init sound. Poem to myself.

If you give a painter 8 colors they still just mix them and ultimately have up to millions of colors in their completed work. Should they have stuck to 8?
My fridge has 50 ingredients in it but I don't get overwhelmed when I make meals, nor do I make myself use all 50 ingredients in every meal. No one complains 'there's too many ingredients now, I wish I never discovered XYZ dish' (well maybe Hákarl). I never see 'I have too many ingredients I can't make anything' complaints in cooking discussions.
No mechanic complains that they can't get to the job done because they have too many tools.
Daily people complain in electronic music discussions that they have access to too many tools.

Yeah, but then we get that one trial of vegan mayonnaise that was nasty but for some reason still takes up space in our refrigerator.ROTMetro wrote: Tue Mar 18, 2025 7:30 pm If you give a painter 8 colors they still just mix them and ultimately have up to millions of colors in their completed work. With hindsight it was the …… I know I haven’t got time to use it at the moment but it will come in really useful some time in the future…….way of thinking that led me to have more plug-in alternatives than I’ll ever have time to make use of or even properly explore. And even if I had infinite time I know I would still end up reaching for my favourites.
With hindsight…….

Vegan mayonnaise emulsion is almost indistinguishable from the original.
You can be creative in any right place on Earth, and not only in the wealthiest cities. Bring the world feelings from everywhere, and not only feelings of capitalistic or jail environment.

I think buying software is very different than buying hardware in that it doesn't really take up physical space and costs significantly less
I view software as a "consumable" product. In any profession or hobby you will buy things that you use for a day, a week, a year, or a decade and then discard, sell, or giveaway
If you golf you buy clubs, balls, gloves, tees, pay greens fees etc, if you are a professional plumber you buy tools, and plumbing supplies that you use up or wear out and you get more
Most plugins cost less than a round of golf costs once you factor in greens fees and cart rentals. Even the most expensive plugin I own which is Omnisphere costs less than I would pay to play a round at several nice courses around me
When it comes to buying a plugin if it's something that brings me enjoyment for even a few hours and I can afford it why not buy it? What's the difference between buying the new Serum 2 for $189 and having a fun weekend with it, or playing a round of golf that costs $189? You can use Serum 2 next weekend and pay nothing if you want to play golf next weekend you have to pay more money
for professional use where you are getting paid to use a synth it's a simple question. Can you make more money from buying that synth than you will spend on buying it. Even if you will only use a piece of software once if it makes financial sense to buy it for a job do some it's a consumable
The best part about considering software as consumables, is that when you no longer want to use it, you can sell it, give it away, or just delete it. It's not going to sit in some landfill, and you can feel good about doing so
If course you can also use it for years to come

Hoarding sw...so what? If it tickles your ivories, buy as many as you want.
Hoarding hw...so what? Ditto.
I fail to see why anyone gets hot under the collar about either. You buy what you want and use it however you want. If I have 20 times more synths than I could possibly use at any one time in whatever format...who cares? Pay more attention to what you yourself do than what other people do. Finish a song quickly, finish it slowly, don't finish it at all...it's nobody else's problem. TBH most people on here (including myself) are nerds/geeks to some degree, so collecting loads of stuff tends to go with that. You hoard what you can afford and I hope you get enjoyment out of it. I know I do.
