Realistic Midi Drum Humanizer VST

Hey all, I'm working on a MidiHumanizer plugin that adjusts the velocities of the drum to sound like a real drummer. Unlike other humanizing plugins, it does not only randomize the velocities but uses velocity curves like a real drummer would do while playing. I'd love to get some feedback if possible and the plugin is available here: https://kafkastudios.com/midi-humanizer.html
I also did a small youtube video showing how to use the plugin:

It sounds good. It's just velocities right? I've been playing around with scripting in Reaper for better humanization, trying to balance realistic velocity responses with timing adjustments too and instructions too. It's not easy, but interesitng stuff. This is an area where I think ML will be useful in the future.

Hey, thanks @Funkybot's Evil Twin. Yeah for now it's only for velocities, but I plan on adding timing as well in the future.
I agree that ML could be useful for this kind of stuff especially if you are aiming for a specific drum groove/vibe.

I'm excited to try this, however, as is, I don't believe it will work in my DAW Cubase.
Typically for MIDI fx to work in Cubase, the FX needs to be able to run as a VSTi and then its MIDI outputs are sent to the instrument that the control is desired on.
This seems to run as a VST and placing it as an insert on my MIDI instrument doesn't do anything as those inserts run after the instrument.
Please let me know if you have any recommendations on how to get this to run in Cubase.

@WithLibertyMusic,
I'm sorry to hear that, I'm not familiar with Cubase at all so I can't give you any advice for your particular use case. However, I will try to investigate this in the future.

I tried this with Cakewalk by Bandlab. When I drag the MidiHumanizer VST to drop it in the midi track's fx bin, the cursor changes to a NO symbol because you can't drop auto fx (VSTs) on a midi channel.
I am able to load it on the drum bus but it does nothing that I can hear.

Unfortunately, Cakewalk, like Cubase, has problems with certain types of MIDI FX. I've never seen a good explanation, and I've used Cakewalk for years.bitman wrote: Tue Apr 15, 2025 4:06 pm I tried this with Cakewalk by Bandlab. Some won't show up as "MIDI FX" in your list of plug-ins, or if they show up, they need to run as an instrument or an effect, and even then, they may not work properly or do anything at all. And that's a shame, because I've been watching this since it showed up on Gearspace a few days ago.

It’s hard to tell how effective this humanizer plugin is with such poor artificial sounds and music.
Wouldn’t some real drum samples be better for this demo than these Jan Hammer drums?

THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

@Jamcat, Better drum plugins have better sound, but they tend to use heavy compression and tape saturation by default, diminishing the effects on velocity variations.
I probably should have shown with the intensity knob on higher to show how much it can impact the sound.

I think I just fixed the VST to now work as a VSTi. You can now download the new version here:WithLibertyMusic wrote: Mon Apr 14, 2025 11:22 pm I'm excited to try this, however, as is, I don't believe it will work in my DAW Cubase.
