I'd like this thread to become a list of systematic hardware-vs-plugin effects comparisons like the following two:
https://www.amazona.de/lydkraft-tube-te ... 1b-plugin/
https://www.amazona.de/test-drawmer-1973-softube-1973/
Not a great example for what I'm after:
https://www.amazona.de/vergleichstest-s ... r-limiter/
What I mean by systematic:
In the first two examples I appreciate that the reviewer didn't go by ear only or by numbers & pictures only but used both sides to complement each other. And it doesn't have to be super scientific, but I appreciate stuff like comparing reverb trails with IR or discussing different methods of capturing & simulating a plate (e.g. uncut trails like Transatlantic vs. processed trails as in other IR-based plate plugins).
What I want to get out of it:
Help make informed investment decisions.
For example, one essay saved me hundreds I considered spending on a certain bundle because it showed that the main aspect I was looking for wasn't provided by the plugins. While their level of emulation may have been great 15 years ago, I'm wondering if tech has evolved enough to close (or at least narrow) that "5 to 1 % gap" that is usually central to such comparisons.
Also feel free to post your own findings if they include anything solid to back up your judgement, like "At this and that setting, the even harmonics in the plugin were 6 dB quieter than in the hardware".
I've read several KVR threads where discussions around old sat/ dist plugins like Decapitator came up. Great topic, but what's often missing is proof for critical mentions of aliasing, harmonics etc.
No proof means no vulnerability. Let's avoid that.
For example, another review of the Chandler Curve Bender I can't find atm claimed that the plugin generated zero coloration at neutral knob settings, in other words: nulled out, which casts doubt on (however vague) claims about 'modeling'. But I don't remember if it contained any proof, and the Amazona article doesn't mention that aspect. Next time I consider that plugin for some use case and have a bit of spare time, I'd like to test the claim for myself.
Let's keep this thread focussed on effects only.
