I'm having a weird ongoing problem with a IK Multimedia UNO Synth Pro X. In Bitwig, the editor VST refuses to connect, unless unless I unplug it and plug it right back in. It's like something else is grabbing that USB MIDI input and not letting it go, but I can still send MIDI to it. I was wondering if there is a tool or something that can let you know what's using what at any given time.

That won't work because if I select the Uno it just tells me something else is using it, but not what.

I always felt usb midi is not that fully tested on midi gear, that is not the product they sell.

I never regretted getting a midi interface, to usb
- that is a product of it's own.
- so carefully tested

So I can use din midi cables all over, no problem with can of worms usb nest, and length of cables is never an issue.
- and midi ports are always there for daw whether gear is powered up or not

The one I trust the most is Nektar Midiflex 4. It also allow to use two as either inputs or outputs.
- it stands the test running big sysex files without choking

I just ordered one. I had been using a MOTU micro Express, but it sort of went belly up. Not sure if it's just the drivers are no longer compatible with Windows 11, or it's just dying. It seems fine, but I can't get it to work anymore. Maybe I'll have better luck using good ol' DIN MIDI.

There will be overhaul of whole MIDI system on Windows soon, which will ease many pains people have now. I also opted using MIDI cable instead of USB - mainly because no drivers for Win11 anymore for the keyboard. Works great, gets power from USB and signal via ye olde DIN-5

USB MIDI on Linux works well.
I can't recall a situation in the past where it broke for me, or something went screwy.

While I do use USB MIDI on Linux and it's working mostly okay, I did temporarily have problems if using the "wrong" USB hub. I got a powered USB hub and that helps fix things even if I plug the MIDI keyboard directly into the computer. I'm not really sure about the specifics.

Other than that, I wholeheartedly support good old reliable DIN MIDI. I miss those a lot. If I get back into hardware, I'll be using those. I used to have a daisy-chained MIDI setp (in the 1990s) of drum machines, a CZ-5000, a standalone sequencer, and outboard rack effects. I didn't have as good sound design, but I could jam out musical ideas faster with that. I recorded into a 4 track digital recorder with MIDI sync and out from that into a MiniDisc recorder. Funny setup, but I got a lot done!
