Surround Mixing Via HDMI?

Before I go wasting hundreds of dollars on an AV receiver, does anyone know for certain whether I could plug one into a PC via HDMI and access the discrete surround channels in a DAW? I've been scouring the internet and am yet to find any conclusive answers.

If it can be done in Cubase/ASIO4ALL then that would be ideal, otherwise I'm open to suggestions (Davinci Resolve perhaps?). Latency isn't a concern, as I would only be using it for mixing.
