Hello All

I thought that it was that time again :D

I am constantly astonished at the amoount of free & low-priced software you can get for music production.

It is all done by independent - usually one-person - devs, who are doing out of the love of music, music production, experimentation and helping a fantastically imaginative and creative community.

Without these people, I could never have had a start in making music, and I suspect that many others here feel the same.

Without having to be slaves to marketing, business plans and quarterly outturns, these Devs can concentrate on making new and innovative synths and effects that can alter your music in a way that mega companies could never afford to do.

Really these are the guys who have helped create and maintain this community :D

So, Three Cheers for them!!

I would be genuinely interested in what the 'paid for' Devs think of the free-ware devs, Are they seen as a pain in the ass or an opportunity to get users in who later go on to buy the 'real stuff'.. :?:

Post

if you look at it world wide, most people can't afford commercial software.

hurray for anyone that ever made freeware!

from the couple ive spoke to it seems the latter ian.and its true, without the likes of rgb  and crystal id have given up long before id gotten anywhere near pickin up the bigger guns in the synths world.

I've been amazed at the software that's being given away or sold at very low prices. When I first thought of getting into software synthesis and sampling, I could find info on just two products: Bitheadz AS-1 and DS-1.

Tried a demo of AS-1 and couldn't make it work on my machine. Knew it was probably inadequate hardware or my lack of understanding of how to configure things, but rightly or wrongly I was discouraged... the full versions cost too much to take a chance on, and I had far too much non-musical stuff to do for years.

Then I got back into it a couple years ago. WOW. The commercial music software market had broadened out and whole product lines had risen and fallen while I slumbered beneath the unsuspecting streets of Arkham.

I bought a few soft synths, upgraded to the current version of Cakewalk (hey, they renamed it "Sonar" and it no longer runs on steam power), and more or less got the hang of them.

Then I found KvR. WOW again. Spent months ploughing through dozens of free plug-ins, found some real winners (not all are the flashy or exciting ones, how about that?), and watched the scene evolve.

Since then the bar has been nudged upward, both by innovations and by refinements of existing ideas. ZioKiller's ORGANized Trio and Mr. Ray are superb, just to mention the two latest to knock my socks off -- and there's so much new material coming out that I could never keep up even with the news if it weren't for the discussions on KvR.

What a world. It's raining soup, and just about anyone can have a bowl.

Soup cooks of the world: you have my thanks too!

Meffy
