The drums on this. That start properly around 30 second in.

I'm interested in the drum machine(s) used as I like the snare sound. Also when they do the quick break, whenever I try and program that kind of thing it just sounds really unnatural. Perhaps these are breakbeats?

Styles I am not familiar with

Everything in this will get you up to speed with techniques , its for jungle but the techniques apply to any bpm

I like the sound of 'tech step'. It's darker. But are they using the same samples: old soul/funk drum breaks? I don't have an extensive (at all) collection of such. I've never even heard of this genre until an hour ago

This is a great free pack with the more famous breaks, enough to get you started, you'll get a link in the download file

I think they layer more synth drums on breaks in tech step more so than jungle, but the foundation is usually still a break

It' interesting to experiment. Not sure this style fits my music as breakbeats don't really work if the music is slower. Not overly sure what new can be done with them. I was hoping to find some breaks in Bill Bruford's drum patterns with early Yes, but that involves listening to songs for hours. :D
