curious what patchbays people here are using and how they like them.

i am in need and looking to find the best combination of price and quality.

Post

no patchbay users... or is this the wrong forum?

Akai ME30P II.
But I suspect that's not the kind of patchbay you mean.

nice - but no.

i am moving and the space that surrounds this gear i call the studio will be shrinking. time to tame my cable clusterfuck as i am not going to have room to be walking behind my rack to patch. ;)

just looking for a good word of mouth recommendation.

I use Kelsey Accoustics. Bought them years ago and they weren't particularly cheap (50 quid each at the time in approx 1995?). They were recommended to me from the pro studio supplies place I used to shop at. And the fact I've had them for 10 years with not a single dodgy connection yet tells me they were good value. Normalised or non-normalised...easy to do...you just clip out the board and slot it back in the other way around.

And I'm a smoker too - there must have been kilos of tar blown in there over the years, but they still transmit cleanly (dunno how - they must be teflon coated or summat :hihi: ) They have a reassuring "thunk" as you patch cords into them and grip tightly.

A nice writing strip which I manged to f**k up by using the wrong type of pen which now won't rub off though :? So I use paper tape to label them.

I have got a cheapo one I bought from a DIY electronic shop and made myself, but I only use that nowadays for hanging up cables neatly. The connections didn't stay tight for very long...so I'd say it's worth a few dollars more to get quality patchbays - even posh ones aren't expensive in the general scheme of things, but they're a bloody good investment...probably the best purchase I've ever made for my studio. And it was difficult to buy something that didn't make any sounds, but I've never regretted it.

For audio I use a couple of the Behringer Ultrapatch Pro things, they are crap, but they are very cheap, and they do work ... most of the time. Just have to wiggle the plugs a lot when things cut out :D

I use an Edirol UM-880 midi patcher. Its great.
