The Shamen 'guitar' sound

They used this sound, or sounds (I dunno, that's why I'm asking), on their later dancey stuff.

It's a sort of guitar/crunch sound. Hard to describe. It's throughout the track. What is it? (It's not actually guitar afaik, but they did also use real guitar)
