For the DSP nerds here's the innards:
Based on "Real-Time Physical Modelling for Analog Tape Machines" DAFx 2019 and the Chowdhury DSP tape emulation of the Jiles-Atherton hysteresis model. (shew!)
Inside signal chain:
1. Oversampling (4x) to reduce aliasing
2. Asymmetric soft saturation (tape-like waveshaping)
3. Head bump (low-frequency resonance ~80Hz)
4. High-frequency loss (increases with saturation)
5. Subtle bias/hysteresis simulation
6. Output gain compensation
