Now I'm not normally in the business of mashups, but it always bothered me that Selena Gomez's "Rock God" didn't have any rock in it.

When I set out to rectify this problem, it occurred to me that the "Burn It To The Ground" riff was perfect for it already, and so...

Chr!s,
Thank you for the review! Now your song: Not super familiar with Selena Gomez since she seems to be more of a pop star, so I just listened to her "Rock God"; maybe I've heard it before. From what I know of her, she is a very good singer, though a YouTube video (I know YouTube is not always true) claims someone else does her singing. Anyway, her vocals sound very good on her recording, though I am fairly confident they have some pitch correction happening on her vocals; hardly unusual nowadays. Nickelback: how is it "everyone" hates Nickelback, yet they sell millions of albums? For me, Silver Side Up is by far their best CD (I own it), even if their lyrics are a bit dark for my taste on that album. Since I am a notorious name-dropper: I played in a band at Gazzarri's in Hollywood once; Nickelback played there years later, though the nightclub probably had a different name by then. So I listened to Nickelback's "Burn It to The Ground" on the youtubes: both the studio and live versions. The lyrics are less than edifying, but that song rocks for me! Kind of surprised it didn't get more radio play in the Los Angeles area. The singer in that group clearly has the more hard-rock-appropriate singing, but nothing inherently wrong with your mashup concept that sounds pretty good. Nickelback clearly rocks harder instrumentally than Selena Gomez's band. A pretty good mashup, though Selena's singing clearly sounds more artificial in your recording. I am guessing you did some moderately hard pitch tweaking (and perhaps time stretching), which is hardly unusual for pop and rap music, but not common in hard rock. Though I still think your mashup is good and creative.

Thanks aaron.

Yeah, I never got the Nickelback hate tbh

Her vocals will sound a bit strange because of two reasons: I had to pitch up her vocals by a semitone (and burn it to the ground down a whole step) as well as time-stretch her voice to make them fit. Also, since I couldn't find an acapella of "Rock God" I had to do the old trick of taking an instrumental of the song, plus the full mix and phase invert them to try and isolate the vocals, which always creates some quality loss and artifacts.

Thank you for listening and reviewing!
