Okay, this feels a bit cheap but...

Any ideas for heavy film-score drum/percussion samples? I know that there is Stormdrums, and I might go for that in the end, but are there any "smaller" (and yes, cheaper) alternatives? Either loops or (preferably) kits? It feels like Stormdrums contains more things I don't want or need than things i do want and need. Or have I got it wrong?

I do have basic orchestral percussion (like GPO, SampleTank2, etc.), so that's not what I'm looking for, but rather those "over the top" percussion sounds...

Finest regards,
Rico

Thanks for the prompt reply...

GigaStudio is apparently not for me. I have a bundled version, but for some reason I never managed to register it so it has expired, and given that trouble I never cared to update it to a better version...

The SAM looks promising, but then I have to wait for the VSTi version...

Hmmm, yeah, that's true. I'll go on "window-shopping" for a while and see what comes out of it.
Again, thanks for the input.

The SAM stuff sounds very nice, so I can recommend this stuff. Also, I like 'London Orchestral Percussion'.

Maybe try using some alternative instrument? Could be interesting - CD's like 'Voices of Native America' have loads of great percussion hits perfect for filmscore.

Yellowtools Culture. Might be overkill if you feel Stormdrum contains more than what you need... but for percussive stuff, it's the bomb. Amazing variety of material, besides the "basic" percussions, and the engine has seriously usable features for percussive stuff. Definitely worth considering.

I have both Stormdrum and Culture. They are both perfect for film scores. I've heard good things about LOP as well. I also have VSL's Percussion library as well, again, excellent material, but it's for Giga, and the most expensive of the lot. GTown stuff I never liked. The burned in ambience made them useless to me. But they're free, so I really can't complain. True Strikes I'm sure will be excellent as well. I have Project Sam brass (Bones and Horn), and expect just as high quality from them as their brass collection.

We have a new Orch. Perc. library out that is larger than ANYTHING on the market by far. We have a product comparison on our site which shows this. You might remember our first library 'Ultimate Orchestral Percussion' which really started all the large format specific libraries.

Here are a couple of links:

Broken link!

(Was curious to see how your library compared to VSL.)

VSL has like 65 instruments. This has 8? I think stating 'largest' is kinda pushing it. ;)

I think the VSL Horizon - Stone and Glass would be a top choice for filmscore also. Waterphones, Verraphone etc... need i say more! Cant wait to get hold of a copy myself.

Honestly, free samples + what you have already should do fine. Check out some of this guy's stuff:

http://soundtempest.net/unknown/

Good friend of mine. Uses ONLY free samples and nothing else from within FLStudio. And honestly, some of the big ethnic percussive sounds he uses (free from SampleFusion) sounds just as good as the sounds from Stormdrum I heard in the demo.

Well, I am a FL user and have downloaded a lot of the free stuff from SoundFusion. But I had another check today after reading Your post, and apparently they have made a bunch of new downloads available since my last visit. Some of the percussion is interesting, though I still really on't find what I'm looking for.
But I'll have another go at those freebies while I continue to find out what solution will suit me best.

Once more - thanks for all the replies, a lot of input to sort out, and I'm confident that I'll find a good solution some day.

Rico
