Non desktop stands for 5 inch monitors good idea?

Does it make sense to place 5 inch monitors [dimensions: 170mm (6-11/16") X 222mm (8-3/4")] on a non-desktop speaker stand (/ tripod), placed behind your desk? Or are 5 inch monitors too small and would it be better to place them on the desk using a stand designed to be placed on desks?

These are often called near field monitors.
The closer these are placed to your ears, the less you hear room reflections, so it sounds most natural without room coloration.
If you can do that with tripods, I don't know.

I have had 2 sets of 5" monitors (first JBL LSR305, now Vanatoo Transparent One Encore +) on floor stands.
Having them on stands definitely reduces the bass response from desk reflections and cleared up some muddiness.
I recommend it, I have had good feedback from professional mixers, producers and a mastering engineer on mixes I've made with the setup.
If you're not familiar with basic room acoustics, I'd recommend that before committing to any specific location.

My own experience tells me that it’s almost always better to place monitors on stands, as opposed to the desktop itself. I’d add an important caveat as well. You want to make sure that the stands you’re using, don’t cause rattling noises from the hardware.
I would have them positioned so that you can get the best sweet spot, and the widest imaging as possible. Make sure that each monitor is equal distance away from your head during playback. And you should be good to go.
Even though they’re only 5” monitors, I would still recommend some form of acoustic treatment in your room. That includes anything from professional panels, to blankets and furniture that soak up resonant frequencies and reflections.
Even a little effort in this area, can make big differences during the mixing process. Good luck!!
