Future-Proof for Serum 2
Following the release of Serum 2, a new patchpool library for this extremely capable hybrid synthesizer was overdue. Future-Proof focusses on organic timbres and textures derived from acoustic instruments and vocal sources, juxtaposed with futuristic sounds reflecting the environment we live in today and in the years to come. The spectral re-synthesis and granular engines are prominently used in this library, dozens of wavetables have been extracted from acoustic and electronic sources, some instruments were (multi)sampled exclusively for this new patch collection, others were borrowed from the vast pool of patchpool samples accumulated over the years.

The sampled sources include string instruments like santur, oud, lyre, a large monochord, a sound object best described as dual string drum (Ballastsaiten - invented by German artist and musician Paul Fuchs), various saxophones and brass instruments, voices, metallic and glass sound objects, percussion, mallets, electronic textures and more.

Each patch has up to eight Macros and the modulation wheel assigned, some presets also use aftertouch, giving the user deep control to shape the sounds and adapt them to a given musical context. All assets are stored in their dedicated folders in the Serum 2 library, the import-function introduced in Serum 2 simplifies the installation process.

You can view/download the PDF for this set including the license agreement, technical info and a detailed patchlist here.

Please note: There seems to be a bug in Serum 2 when exporting preset packs, in the preset browser some patches are missing their category and preset notes while others don’t, so please refer to the patch-list in the PDF for patch descriptions. I’ve filed a bug and hope the developer will fix the issue.

All demos were produced entirely with Serum using only patches from Future-Proof, no post-processing was applied apart from a limiter on the outputs and some volume automation, if several instances of Serum were used in a track.

No meditation music!

Dystopian drone-scape featuring two patches (Underscore/Pumpkin Cycle) from Future-Proof for Serum 2 - some volume automation and controller action -100% Serum 2.

Improvisation featuring two patches from Future-Proof for Serum 2. An e-bowed strum stick in spectral oscillator with one of the warps in RM mode using a wave-tabled e-bow sound as input (coming in towards the end of the demo). The drone in the background is a granular strum-stick tremolo layered with a wavetabled tremolo.

later that day:

Video featuring the patch “White Fog“ from Future-Proof for Serum 2, a vocoder pad using granulated spoken word as vocoder modulator for a pad sound in two spectral oscillators.

Editing text files with sfz data sure isn't much fun but totally worth it...

Improvisation featuring three patches (multi-sampled lyre, Bowed Metal, Grain Filter Scape) from Future-Proof for Serum 2 - some Macro and volume automation, 100% Serum 2.

Audio demo featuring four patches from Future-Proof for Serum 2, multi-sampled tonal percussion, bell-like sounds - 100% Serum 2. The audio quality of the sample player in Serum 2 is pretty amazing, even when transposing samples down significantly there is no aliasing whatsoever, good stuff!

The expansion sounds like it’s coming along very nicely Simon. And as much as I love textured pads and atmospheres, Serum 2 is also very well-equipped for interesting metallic impacts and bell sounds, like in your last two videos.

Resonant plucks processed with rhythmic delays and automated bit-crushing, can be an effective way to create interesting phrases, with lots of fine details to tickle the ears. I’m definitely looking forward to Future-Proof’s release day!

Now that Serum can use multisamples with round robins and several velocity layers, spectral resynthesis and granular the possibilities have of course vastly expanded and FMing samples with other oscillators is something not many synths can do at this sort of high fidelity which is great for metallic and percussive sounds in general - the deep sampling phase for this set will start next week after I've released my Zebra3 bank, some very interesting instruments are sitting here, waiting to be multi-sampled. And I have yet to fully explore the onboard sequencer which is more like a piano roll in a DAW, very useful!

So I started sampling these amazing sound objects today - invented by German artist and musician Paul Fuchs - let's call them “String Drums“, two differently sized metal-framed drums with plastic skins mounted in a steel construction, a wire holding a metal beam is attached to the skins, when you hit the wire with a mallet/drumstick or pluck it with the finger, extraordinary sounds occur and alls sorts of resonances are triggered. One can also hit the beams or hit the kettles directly for more sound variants, hitting the string and then pulling the beam down will create glissando effects. Stay tuned for sonic results...

Is this a commercially available product or a custom design?
As a percussionist, I'd like to at least know how they sound, so if you have a link that would be appreciated.

It's custom design, one of a kind, invented and designed by German artist and musician Paul Fuchs, will post plenty of examples later and of course Serum patches using these sounds in various ways.

Thanks Simon.

Here is a first demo for a string-drum patch:

Demo for a single patch from Future-Proof for Serum 2. This patch layers string drum kettle accents with 4x round robin in OSC A, another kettle accent in spectral OSC B and a granular texture with hi bell and some rattling sounds and resonances in OSC C, some Macro automation in Logic.
