How to make that sound...

Let´s guess a little bit how the Lead starting at 00:21 in Nikolai´s "ready to flow" has been created. Anyone?

It's white noise through a band pass filter with a high resonance.
Set the volume adsr in a plucky type-setting and add some reverb.

Play with the volume of the white noise and the resonance of the filter till you get the character you want.
Then turn on key tracking so you can play notes

Ready to flow was released in 1994, so it can´t be VA-Synth with a multimode Filter.
I assume that it´s not a real analog Synth, the filter tuning is never perfect and tuning problems the consequence - and multimode filters are really rare in the analog domain.

The E-mu EiV-Generation was released at the end of ´94 - the S2000 Akai Generation in 95 - and to make it short - I ask myself which sampler may be considered.

So let´s look at the ROMplers: the JV1080 was already popular and had several filter types. It´s a plausible candidate.

But when you try what you suggested you´ll quickly remark that noise is maybe a propable source, but you can´t match the clear tonality of the sound with these simple filters.

The sound is full, clearly tonal and well tuned (what is not that easy with resonance).

So what do you think of a one shot sample of "resonance colored noise" from an unknown Synthesizer with additional volume envelope + FX?

Sorry forgot to add that it needs some distortion
That's what gives it that squarish feel

I've made this sound multiple times before.

You could do this with a low pass filter and simply use an EQ after the synth to cut off the lows

I´ll go on trying. Recreating sounds in normally not my domain, but I´ve already generated interesting results with JUNO Noise and the Halion Bandpass Filter.

But I´m in sound design for some time now and know how treacherous sound can be - and the clear tonality of the sound is a hint for me, that the task is more complex than it seems. The filters I´ve tested all don´t generate such defined spectrums. All they create are "ghosts", sounds that sound like the sound but lack it´s musical charactersitics imho (tonality, clear spectrum).

In the later part of the track you can hear some "phenomenons" occuring at the lower notes that furthermore indicate that it´s definitely the filter resonance and not just a pitched sample.

thx!

Thanks for the effort CHOOS!

I would assume it was created on a synth using a square waveform with a short release on the envelop and lots of distortion. I am pretty sure that you can hit that same tone if you find the right key on the piano roll.
