Hey everyone,

iam releasing my fourth plugin under PAA Audio and posting it here because honestly, this is the one I'm most proud of and I'd really value your ears on it.

Tape56K is a one-knob tape saturation plugin modeled after the Lyrec TR-533 (2-inch 24-track machine, same one SPL referenced for the original Machine Head).
The whole tape character saturation, head bump, pre/de-emphasis, cycle-by-cycle compression is tuned together and driven by a single TAPE
control.

What it actually does to your mix
─────────────────────────────────
- More musicality — the digital edge gives way to something that
breathes and moves with the music.
- More perceived loudness without smashing transients.
- Instruments sit noticeably better — kicks, vocals, bass stop fighting
for space and lock into the bus.
- Mixes sound finished. That ineffable difference between a bedroom
mix and a record. One knob.

The story / why I built it
──────────────────────────
After three plugins focused on specific tools (a bus compressor, a delay,
a streaming utility) I wanted to build the one I'd reach for on every
session — the "make it sound finished" knob.

Under the hood I went deeper than I probably should have. The saturation stage runs in 24-bit Q23 fixed-point with a 56-bit saturating accumulator the same kind of math that 1990s DSP56K-based studio hardware (SPL Machine Head, Lexicon 480L, TC's M5000-era boxes) used to process audio. Not a plugin-on-plugin emulation but the underlying math approach.

I've put it on every kind of source I could find (drum bus, mix bus,
vocals, bass, synths, master) and to my ears it consistently delivers.

But I want unbiased opinions from people who do this every day.

What I'd love feedback on
─────────────────────────
- Does it deliver on different sources? Where does it fail?
- Is the one-knob amount mapping right? Too aggressive at max? Too tame?
- Anything you'd want the next update?

Cheers,
Philipp / PAA Audio
