Hi everyone.

Just new to this forum, and hoping to learn and share information.
So...I've recently bought an old Zoom MRS-1044 multi-track recorder, which powers up okay, then displays INT HDD Error. I took out the old 15GB IDE hard drive for inspection, and stripped it down and cleaned connections, but to no avail. It seems to be dead, and doesn't spin up or make any whirring noise when powered up, and connected to the Zoom studio. I will try connecting the 15GB drive to a working PC, but I'd expect the same result TBH.
Replacing another IDE hard drive is easy to do. The problem though, is that the old HDD is "married" to the Zoom studio. This is because the original drive has the software/firmware, and all the data required to make the Zoom studio operate!! A replacement drive also needs to be formatted by the Zoom studio, and requires 2 x FAT 32 partitions on the drive.
Does anyone have one of these old recorders, and if so, do they have the recovery installation CD for the Zoom-1044 ?
I've looked for an ISO of this installation CD, but can only find the one for the Zoom-1608. There might be a chance that this ISO would work with the Zoom 1044, but not sure?
I've also thought of purchasing another working Zoom-1044, then cloning the HDD while connected to a PC, but again not sure this would work? The new donor drive appears to only work if formatted by the Zoom-1044.
Any replies or thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers everyone

Did you know the unit had this defect when you bought it? If this was not advertised (or reflected in the price) I'd return it to the seller and buy another one. Buyers have protection for a reason. These units currently seem to go for under €150.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yes, I was aware of the error before buying. I knew that I had some old IDE drives, and thought it would be a straight swap over. As I now know, the Zoom-1044 needs to have the software/firmware on the replacement drive. If I can't get a copy of the Zoom recovery CD or an ISO, then I'm thinking of buying another working unit. I should then be able remove the working HDD, then clone the contents to a donor drive. This should work in theory, but it wouldn't be certain to work.

With "another working unit" you can just bin the one with the defective drive ;-)

I'd just clone another hard drive, then I'd have two working recorders. That would be the plan looking forward. Failing this, then I'd have one for spares at least! If I could get hold of a Zoom recovery CD, then things would be so much easier.

I have the same problem. Cant find a CD anywhere and zoom are dismissive because the device is "too old". The actual firmware is on the zoom.jp sire but no real instructions to install.
