BB King, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards did (and countless others I forget now)
I don't though I do think about it every ten years or so.
I should they all spend time in my lap and I think of them as having distinct personalities which form the decisions I make on what style of music to play on them.

Mostly just call them pieces of shit when they don't do what I want them to.

I voted "no" ... but actually now that I think about, perhaps naming them would be fun.

He named his Black which was cobbled together with different parts from different strats over different years "Blackie" as it was black. He had another stratocaster named Brownie. He named his Red Les Paul Red.EyeCloud wrote: Thu May 28, 2026 3:59 pm I wouldn't want to hear what Eric Clapton calls his based on his history of finding names for things...
All guitars have an innate personality. That's part of the reason why we buy them they have a "character" in the tone that speaks to us. Then there is us. We sit with it in our lap or stand with it hanging over us touching our bodies and we try to pour our soul into them. Shouldn't that be enough to name the instrument we devote so much time and energy into?
The naming principle is what hangs me up. My number one right now is the "Sage" colored telecaster. It's a faded metallic blue. My number two is my D'angelico Tammany with Sapele back and sides. My number three is a harvest green Stratocaster which reminds me of fresh parsely. And I still own the pine body telecaster which I rarely play. Parsley, Sage, Sapele and Pine (Simon and Garfunkel reference) I'm not going to name my other guitars after spices. If I ever get a date I'm not going to introduce her to them as "The Spice Girls" And I don't want her to look under my bed and find my "Jazz Boxes" Things could get weird.

I never really thought of a good reason to name them. I don’t have that many, and they’re all different colors, so when I refer to them to my family, they’re “the white/red/black/acoustic/sitar one.” To my guitarist friends, they’re the Steinberger/Steinberger bass/G&L/Seagull/Coral Sitar. I only name things that cry for food.

I don't have names for my guitars beyond "the Fender" or "the Nighthawk" or "that blue thing".
My bass amp, on the other hand is known as "The Monolith" because the cabinet gives me flashbacks to "2001".

It's complicated. They all have names, given to them by my partner. She claims she doesn't name them, but rather that the names "come to her" which I guess is different somehow.

im glad im not the only yes vote, although my partner isn't involved in the naming here.
i name them after classic horror actors, so i have boris, bela, claude, and lon.
i don't name the acoustics.

So one guitar you name by brand another you name by model. And your amp gets a sci-fi reference.Magic Russ wrote: Fri May 29, 2026 3:29 pm I don't have names for my guitars beyond "the Fender" or "the Nighthawk" or "that blue thing".

Fair enough.
I wouldn't have any consistency with my guitar naming either. Some times I think of bad names like Florence Beatrice, Russell, Claude, etc But I like the guitars too much.

I guess I don't project a personality or anything onto my guitars, to me they are just objects.
I appreciate their quality / sound stuff. A guitar doesn't speak to me in any such way, nor does any other instrument or item.
I don't have pets either, nor any interest in having them. It's not that I don't like them,
I can not give them the attention or dedication they require, I am just aware of it.
