This seems to be an interesting interface, especially at the price. Anyone here who has successfully done the aggregated device setup in Mac (where you can combine multiple devices into one)? Very curious to see if that approach can help integrate this little guy in my RME setup.

Why is the SSL interesting? Sorry I don't have an answer to your question just wondering why you picked this interface.

I don't have an RME or an SSL interface, but I've set up aggregate devices on Macs several times over the years and it's always worked pretty flawlessly IME. I currently have my Apollos set up as my main interface and my TR-1000 drum machine (for USB audio) set up as an aggregate device. The setup is pretty straightforward and documented here:

It’s a 32-bit interface. I don’t have to worry about clipping.

Great. I might finally integrate my 404 with my RME setup without additional wires.

What are you recording with huge dynamic swings where you might suddenly clip?

I feel like the RME should handle any musical context without clipping.

Are you doing some extreme sound design?

There surely is a clipping point somewhere.
The real question is: where exactly...
They spent a section on it on their FAQ:

Q: Do I still need to worry about setting the input gain when using my SSL device that has 32-bit converters? I’ve heard 32-bit devices can’t be clipped...
A: In short - yes, you do still need to set an appropriate gain to make sure your SSL device does not run the risk of clipping.

If that SSL interface is same as my Pure Drive Quad, it works like this
- +24 dB headroom, and +24 dB peaks create 0 dBFs peak level.
- so record at peaks 0 dB on interface will make -24 dBFs peaks in daw

The eletronics always has its limits as designed, as BertKoor said. Just focusing on converters is not relevant.

I looked a little further.

This is a 32bit fixed point converter. Good specs, but not...

The 32bit floating point style converters, where it is really two converter, one handling the low level sounds and one the high level sounds, combines them, and has crazy dynamic range - those are the "can't clip" style.

So yeah you will still have to worry about clipping.

Ah, good catch folks. Perhaps I'll hold off on this one. It was alluring to me since it was SSL at such a cheap price point. I was fooling myself into thinking I'll use the 32-bit converters, but my current setup is more than sufficient.

GAS avoided, thank you team.
