Often, when I’m on the train, I listen to the music I’ve composed. Then I notice things: at one point the guitar should come in later, at another the drums need more punch. But I never have anything to write with, and later I think, “What was it I wanted to change again—and where?”
So for a long time I was looking for an app that could save notes while listening. Nobody had built one, so I sat down and did it myself.
I built an iOS/Android-App called HeadNote as a companion tool for checking songs away from the studio.
The use case is simple: you export a track, listen on the go, and whenever you notice something, you place a timestamped comment right at that position. Later, you can use the exported or printed data back in your production workflow.
HeadNote is useful for things like:
* arrangement notes
* lyric fixes
* transition checks
* demo review
* rehearsal notes
* general “this part needs attention” moments
It can also
* works offline once songs are loaded
* jump back to saved markers/comments
* export as CSV
* export markers as a MIDI marker track
* manage multiple sessions/projects
There’s also a free HeadNote VST plugin available on the website for DAW-related workflow where you can import the CSVs.
The app is intentionally focused: local files, clear timing, fast access, no clutter, and no subscription model.
The features of the iOS and Android versions may differ slightly. This is only temporary — over time, all features will be brought to the other platform.
