Hi everyone,
I grew up with ProTracker, FastTracker II and OctaMED, and I've always missed that workflow — the pattern grid, the immediacy, the whole feel. So I started building my own modern take on it. This is the first public version.
RetroTrax runs both as a VST3 plugin and as a standalone app on Windows, macOS and Linux. What's in this first stage:

8 tracks, 64-row patterns, ProTracker-style scrolling grid
16 instrument slots — loads WAV / AIFF / FLAC / OGG / MP3
The legendary Amiga ST-XX sample disks built in (~5,900 public-domain sounds) — browse and load them with one click; samples stream from the Internet Archive and cache locally, so the plugin stays small
Each instrument has its own colour from a 16-colour retro palette, so notes glow in the grid in their instrument's colour
Computer keyboard as piano + MIDI input
UI in English and German, switchable

It's early days — this is stage 1 (the sampler). Real C64 SID emulation (reSIDfp) is the next big step, followed by classic tracker effects, MOD/XM import and CLAP support.
It's free and open source (GPL-3.0). If you try it, I'd genuinely love to hear what works, what's confusing, and what you'd want next.

This is a heart project, built in my spare time, and it'll always stay free. If anyone feels like buying me a coffee there's a Ko-fi link on the page — but that's entirely optional, no worries at all if not. 🙂
Thanks for looking,

Mukkemann
