i would expect something like a big muff, like Robert Sledge of Ben Folds Five uses.

Big Muff? My fellow guitar player with the Chicken Fistfuckers had one but it died on him.

I'd like a software tool though.

well there is NI Guitar rig, i believe i read that the next update will include a big muff though that is expensive - there is also amplitube by IK. Personally, i'm using Sampletank2, as it incorporates some of the features amplitube and t-racks - along with a wide of bass guitars and other instruments. In fact, i've made a Robert Sledge patch, for all my Ben Folds Five needs
