I'm trying to import a midi file into a project, but I want to be able to double or half its tempo independently of the other tracks.
I've tried using the time stretch tool but its not always successful. (The timing can be out).

As far as I know when you import a midi file, it either fits to the projects tempo, or you use the tempo of the midi file itself and there's no easy way of adjusting it independantly.

Thanks.

Use the logical editor. I believe there are presets for both double and half time. In other words, import the midi file, then select that part and perform the logical edit on it.

*edit: damn you beat me.

select your notes you want to change (ctrl+a), right click and go to the logical editor in the midi tab... go to preset of your choice.

Doesn't Cubase SX have a "Tempo Track" that allows changing of the tempo mid-song? I used to use it quite a bit for breakdowns.

What do you mean by "The timing can be out" using the time stretch? If the MIDI data is all in one part, choose the arrow tool dropdown option "sizing aplies time stretch" and just resize the part, if the timing is quantized before it will be quantized after.

If the part is non-quantized and you are trying to preserve the "feel" you may want to turn off the snap option before you resize.

And yes Cubase has a tempo track, and depending on which version of Cubase SX you have you may also have the warp tool in the MIDI key editor to help with this as well.
