Hi,
I'm new to comp music, but not to PC's in general. I'm in need of some advice, and I've gotten some good info from other areas on KVR...
My questions are - do I need a dedicated "sampler" like GIGA or SAMPLETANK or can I just use a .wav library?
I'm currently using TRACKTION which has a built-in sampler, and probably just need .wav samples - if this is so, why bother with something like GIGA/SAMPLETANK if your sequencing program can just use the raw .wav sounds?
If I DO get SAMPLETANK, etc, does it allow you to use multiple instances on multiple tracks so, for example, you can have a bass line on track one, flutes on 2, etc, all with the SAMPLES you purcahsed the library from?
I'm looking to do composing with mostly real instrument sounds and trying to narrow down my best options. Any other suggestions will help.
I'm also thinking of getting Sonar 4 Producer edition...
Thank you for any advice or info.

I can't speak for Tracktion, other than that I understand it used to have issues with multi-timbral synths (one instance supports one or more MIDI channels and can play one or more different sounds concurrently - ie you can load a brass quintet, each on its own channel and sample set, all in one instance).
The advantages of a sampler (I have ST2LE+SR SS1, Kompakt, and VSampler) are mostly when you're dealing with multi-samples (velocity layers and/or key ranges), buying them for the bundled content (what I did for Kompakt and ST2LE), or taking advantage of the multi-timbral features (all three, plus sfz and sfz+, are).
If you're just using wav files, and you're not going to make soundfont banks out of them (which I make with VSampler or EXSC and play back with sfz or sfz+), then the internal player Tracktion should be sufficient - likewise for Sonar 4P (I have it, but I still mostly work in FLS for my "scratch pad").
Incidentally Sonar 4 (Producer or Studio) works quite a bit differently than Tracktion, make sure you try the demo first.

Tractions sampler is just a wav-player, ok for drums and loops, which I think is what it was made for, but very limited if you want to make multisampled instruments.
I think you are going to need a sampler, but what exactly to get depends alot on your needs. Start by looking over the free stuff. SFZ can do alot of tricks, besides playing soundfonts.
(You might want to look into soundfonts too by the way. Lots of usable free stuff out there.)
If you then feel that you need more control or quality..or just get tired of looking, then get one of the brand name samplers and some sounds for it.
My point is, since you're a newbie, get familliar with whats available for free first. Check out RGC:audios forum here on kvr for lists of free soundfonts for example.
