Hi there can you help me ?? :o
I need a good software free or not to play a midi with a Giga file (*.gig) to record the midi in one wav file or a mp3!

I just got the CD of Holy Grail Piano , my mission is to playback the midi with that sound and record the new sound in wav or mp3

Thank you 8)

You have to buy gigasampler or use chicken translator to change the files into another format, e.g. Halion and load the patches into a sampler, then you can use the sampler as a VSTi.

Or has someone got another solution?

Thank you so much for fast answer but I am total Beginner can you explain me wee bit more?? Which Gigasampler?? and which sampler?? are they 2 different things? or same soft? and what is a VSTi??

I am using Finale 2005 for midi recording, I was thinking of the software Synthsoft to play the midi with the Giga File but it crashes dunno why (cos the soft says it doesnt need any soundcard for converting!), Any more help is welcome.

Well, then u have a bit of learning to do.

Gigasampler is a sample player, see those dropdowns top right, you can check it out there. GIG files are native to this sampler.

The tool chicken translator can convert this format to another formats.

Some virtual samplers can also import and convert the .GIG format.

A VSTi is a Virtual Studio Technology Instrument - a format that has been developed by Steinberg and what this site (along with hosts and effects) is all about.
You can load such an instrument into any compatible host and play it.

Try google, it's too much to explain, most people take 1-2 years learning all the stuff.

Is there really no freeware tool to play or at least convert GIGA?

That's very surprising!

http://www.multitrackstudio.com/feature.php
seems to have own sample player that plays gig or sf2...3 track limit for free version

Or try SynthFont.

I get the impression (based on very little actualy knowledge) that the Gigastudio folks (Tascam?) are very litigious in protecting their claimed intellectual property. I get the feeling they are very quick to start a lawsuit if anyone develops a disk streaming technology that can be used with Giga files. And I wonder if Giga files can be used with much success without disk streaming.

But, this is just a guess . . .

By the way, does anyone know if VSampler that came with Sonar 3.xx (and any free updates thereto) can play Giga files? And whether it can stream from disk?

That doens't sound right, Jeff. EXS24 from Logic does it, HALion, and Kontakt. All of them I don't have to confirm, but they all do Giga. sfz+ does Giga streaming perfectly, but alas, never released. :? If I've missed something here, please, do tell. Getting down disk streaming as well as Giga does seem to be an issue.

Yeah, I might be wrong about this, but I will tell you why its seems like this to me.

I seem to recall something about either Halion or Kontakt having to hold off on disk streaming while they worked out a licensing deal with the Tascam. Does anyone know whether Steinberg, NI and Logic have to pay Tascam for the right to do disk streaming with Giga files?

I got the feeling (again, without any real knowledge), that this might have been one of the reasons that Rene' pulled Giga 2 streaming capability from sfz+ (but again, I could be wrong about this).

I will just throw this theory out there to those who know more than I do (which is pretty much everyone).

See, we're both coming at this without complete knowledge of the situation. ;)

The disk streaming technology is by Rockwell and it was called Endless Wave. That much I do know, as it's on the back of my Gigasampler LE disk. The concept would be hard to completely lock away from everyone else in a patent, and unless they used their code directly, there shouldn't be an issue that I can see to come up with your own disk streaming drivers. I've always have heard Giga is more efficient, and considering I can run Giga 96 all the way up with no poly prolems on a 1ghz Intel machine, but good luck with Kontakt on that slow of a computer, I believe the code behind it is different.

As for Rene, I am curious as to why it was never released. It works beautifully, and I beta tested it on every library I have in Giga (now totalling over 100 gigs) and it works flawlessly. If it were a copyright issue, I would think he would have not even been able to distribute it in a beta capacity, but I could be wrong.

For the record, Rene' said it had to do with Giga 3 coming out, but (to be honest) that never really made sense to me.

There would certainly seem to be a market for an inexpensive Giga 2 player with disc streaming. There are a huge number of Giga 2 samples available that are still among the best.

Well, if anyone else would care to chime in . . .

I agree. I personally do not care for fancy sample mangling tools provided by Kontakt and Halion. I prefer realism often founded in .gig files. It would be great if Rene would publish his sfz+ (or even sfz) player with this functionality. It seems stupid to buy kontakt only for playing gig files in VST enviroment.

Rene, what is your current policy on this issue?

Cheers

This is good news. Does it mean that you will release SFZ+ (real, no beta) with .gig compatibility if there will be no legal boundaries?

It would mean that. Unfortunately, the case seems to be there -are- legal boundaries so far.

Hey Devon, it looks like my hunch might have been correct on this one. Well, you know what they say: even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
