It looks like SOS had pretty much all the significant improvments covered, which I think is a bit unfortunate. I really wanted to see a new type of synthesis represented. Oh well, Combinator and MClass do represent two of the biggest categories of upgrades that I wanted.

Post

What a huge disappointment.

Yeah, I have to agree. At least the MSRP dropped by $130 though. That should impact the retail price quite nicely. The browser and remote are nice to have, but there are so many other feature requests (chord/arp module, new synths, etc) that were requested much more often.

Post

Overall I'm pleased with new features. For me number one is new EQ. Combinator - good thing but not essential for me. I hoped also about some new modular synth but...with Combinator this can also be achieved.

I agree, I wouldve hoped to see an FM synth, or at least an updated malstrom that let you load your own wavetables...

I really wish the props would allow third parties to develop or license out the dsp to their synths to make a reason version.

As of right now, unless the new soundbank is absolutely brilliant, I may not upgrade..

hi

maybe some of things youd hoped would be included are covered here:

www.petertools.com.

their liveset plugin for reason looks pretty cool to me.

just an idea :)

What no fanboys?

Reason threads are usually full of retards telling the world what Reason doesn't need. They must be delighted, they asked for f**k all and the props delivered.

Post

i must say it's a little small what reason 3 offers...especially with the time they took to develop this version.... but the compressor looks really interesting...

about the combinator: it's cool to be able to layer stuff into 1 device, but garbage in/garbage out is still valid..as long as a subtractor oscillator or filter sounds rather "stale" and boring, not "vivid", you can layer all you want into recombinator, the result will still be a stack of boring static-sounding oscillators.... i really would have wanted to see something of a high-quality "alive-sounding" lead/bass synth along the lines of gmedia oddity, impOSCar or arturia minimoog....

I agree. Main drawback for me in Reason is weak sounding Subtractor - weak oscs and boring filter...but again...Combinator will solve this. I hope...

No fanboy here, but a fan. Will that do? :-D

Just read the new Reason 3.0 pages on the Props site, and I'm impressed. Fewer individual items than I'd expected, but I can't summon anything close to disappointment or indignation. The stuff they added includes many of the most asked-for features. (Other than The Three, of course.)

There are some non-obvious additions too. Checking out the new section on the Props site shows a few items that could turn out to be just as revolutionary, and just as sneakily attractive, as the Spiders were in 2.5.

I'm not the only one who's spent hours browsing for the right patch or sample set, am I? :-)

My perspective will naturally be different from those of you who work entirely or almost entirely within Reason. I use Sonar or Live to Forte to control Reason via Rewire -- so if I want so much percussion that Redrum becomes difficult to deal with, I can pop DR-008 in; if I'm not tricky enough to get the classic analog sound I want out of Reason, I can drop in a Moog Modular V; if I want FM beyond what I can do in Subtractor, there's always FM7; and so forth. IOW, added synths would've been nice but they weren't a top priority for me.

But I think even those who work exclusively in Reason, using no other sequencer/DAW/host at all, are going to find a lot to like in the new additions. Mastering right in Reason... that's a big item. Just by itself Combinator is almost enough to constitute a major upgrade.

I hereby predict (really ought to have contacted The Amazing Randi and set up a test protocol so I could win his million dollars; oh well) that Combinator is going to lead to a User Library of lashups that could, in time, become the sort of resource that Reaktor owners rejoice in. It's a different way of working than Reaktor's, yes -- building with big modules, not tiny ones -- but it fits the Reason philosophy and lets us leverage (ack; a biz buzzword!) what we've learned in previous versions to move forward to even more spectacular things.

I'm not diasppointed at all. I wonder why the Props chose to do one thing instead of another, and wish this or that had got in, but I feel that way about my computer, my camera, my bike... heck, even my shoes! :-D

Can't wait for the beta actually to commence. When that happens you'll hear no more from me here about Reason, not even speculation, 'til it's released. (Who's that cheering? Hmph.)

It's easy to ignore the "Improved sample playback timing and quality" statement near the bottom of the page, but this could be substantial. Maybe the filters and oscs have been reworked. You'll have to use it to know for sure.

This update will give Sonic Reality a new product line. I see Squids getting all over the combinator.

=O.O= Now there's a thought. I was wondering whether he had aught to do with the new sound library.

I will tell you if I am disappointed after I have seen the upgrade cost. Although, it would have been nice to have an extra synth to play with - it is a bit ironic that the Reason FX section is probably better than its synth/samplers.
