Cakewalk Sonar 4 - Managing Plugins ) =

There REALLY needs to be a way to manage what catagories plugins show up in within Sonar 4. The Plugin manager doesn't do this and Cakewalk told me there was no feature to do it within the program. But there has to be a way , because some things you will install like BFD for instance and it will show up under BFD , or Waves platinum pack etc.. however anything else shows up under VST , like 2000 plugins under one menu and the scroller is slow as hell.
Does anyone know of a way to do it ?

The Plugin Manager actually will do this (I know, because I've done it this way). For reorganising your VST plugins if you use the Cakewalk adaptor you can try SUBSonar which I wrote specifically to do this.

Hey man, I can help you on this. It's not a sure-fire killer, but it will help keep your list reasonable. The trick is to rename the plug-ins with category titles first. So LoFi Plus would be renamed "Distortion & Lo Fi LoFi Plus.dll". This works only on some plugs, like freeware and synthedit plugs that don't have anything other than the .dll file installed. Another note is that synthedit plugs that have a .dat file with it must also have the .dat file the same name as the renamed .dll file. So ECS.dat would be renamed "Drum Synth ECS.dat", the same as the .dll file. Now, this trick won't work for all plugs, not even all the simple freeware ones. For instance, CM-303 will only work under its original name, but SR202 will work fine renamed. The trick is to get your freeware plugs down into manageable categories so that you don't end up scrolling down a long list of specialty plugs you rarely use.
Oh, and one more thing, make sure that you don't add the VST prefix to the adapted plug-ins in the VST-DX adapter dialog. That way, when you register the renamed plug-ins they fall nice & neat into their new categories that Sonar places them into.
If you need any additional help, PM me.

That's pretty much what SUBSonar does, except it doesnt rename the plugin, it changes Sonar's internal 'friendly name' for each plugin. Which will work for CM303 et.c.
By default it does so based on the folder the plugin is in (so you put all your Reverbs in a folder called 'Reverb' and you get a menu category of 'Reverb') but you can edit the configuration file and set the categories yourself.

Ive had one person report problems with SP2 so I cant narrow it down to that alone, but its the only significant difference I could establisg between their system and mine....

I've used Subsonar for a long time now - maybe 10 months? Excellent program, it really makes my VSTi & VST collection useful and easy to navigate.
I've used it with Sonar 3 and 4, and also XP SP1 and SP2 (in fact, I even used it today). No problems at all.
Maybe the user who is having problems tried to run it under limited user privileges (as opposed to administrator)?

Well, Im glad to hear at least one confirmation of it working under SP2; thanks.
I need to get my arse in gear and do a rewrite (ie add a GUI and tidy up cruft). I dont want to make the guy with issues feel like he has to 'risk' his system by running any diagnostic builds though, but I'll mebbe solicit some actual beta testers next time...

It works on my SP2 as well , I tried running it in windows 2000 compatibility mode which seemed to eliminate an error I got. I also never got it again when running it without compatibility mode... The error was probably unrelated , it works fine on SP2 from what I can tell.GREAT PROGRAM !!
