I've been using a late 90's model Alesis 16 channel mixer as my preamps. I'd like to upgrade my pres. The first thing I'd like to address is plugging my guitar straight into the M-Audio Audiophile.
Any recommendations for good direct input preamps for guitar/bass? The style of guitar sounds I go for are more of the modern rock/thick clean distortion type thing. (anything under $300) Getting a mic pre should be a whole other ballgame, right?
Recommendations for DI box for guitar?

I use a Johnson J Station. Amp sims, nice distortion, good effects and it has S/PDIF out to connect to the Audiophile's S/PDIF in. Very clean signal. I love it and got mine on sale for $99.00 so you should be able to find one for far less than your $300 limit.

I use an M-Audio audio buddy dual channel preamp (2 instrument/mic ins +phantom power). Very cheap , I think ~80$, but fits nicely with my audiophile. I use software for amp sims (JCM900 from simulanalog)
Good luck
