The Verve lifted that string section off a Beatle's album. A large majority of the proceeds from the Verve's hit CD was paid to the Beatles, and far less to the Verve's group members.

Had the Verve re-recorded that passage with live string players (or a set of samples), they could have saved huge dollars.

Perhaps the Verve tried, but just couldn't get the perfect take?

You can lift the original passage yourself, and get the exact sound.

One of the string sections from the sf2 files at
www.sf2midi.com
with a little EQ might satisfy your needs for a free ride.

I think you mean something to do with the rolling stones. never understood the story myself, but then, the royalties go to jagger\richards

It was a hard copy rag on the news stand (so much for accuracy in media) that said it was the Beatles, but I just looked it up on the net and apparently the Rolling Stones' label gets the cash:

The Verve were forced to pay 100% of their royalties from their hit "Bittersweet Symphony" for the use of an unlicensed sample from an orchestral cover version of The Rolling Stones' hit "The Last Time".

It is a land mark case in sampling, thanks for clearing up the facts.

that really sux for the verve; such a great tune - never would have taken it for 'the last time'

the cash in question actually goes into a charity, which i suppose aint too bad but had the verve asked before hand they wouldnt be in the situation so lessons to be learned i guess 8)

100 % of the royalities? Were they punished for adding a bit of spice to that ole men's sound? Shouldn't the Stones be grateful in the meantime if they get attention in any way by some ... ah f**k, I'm stoned, just think it's ridiculous to give the whole roylities to the old men.

thanks for adding that; it really steamed me off, like mick and keith really need the money.
but if it goes to charity, cool for them.
sample clearing, yes it makes sense doesn't it. I mean, on your biggest hit you want everything nice and clean, eh.

think it was shelter that got the money?
or may have bee n warchild but years ago there was a cd well 4 cd singles released with various artists coverin gimme shelter for charity and it went to the same place.

either way it made the verve, they had been around for years before the case so it works both ways

The 100% royalty loss is because they lifted sample(s) and replicated too much of the melody from the same recording. A fancy entertainment lawyer could have gotten them off if:

Had the Verve re-recorded the strings, they would at most be liable to only pay a mechanical royalty (typical of cover songs).

Had the Verve created a new melody (and yet still used lifted samples) they could have likely obtained a more favorable clearance arrangement or other settlement.

There are some options :

* There is Sonic Implants Symphonic strings Mini
(which I believe come in SF2)

* More expensive but has all the options and
articulations is East West Quantum Leap Orchestra
It comes in 3 flavours : Silver (kinda "Light" ed.), Gold (the prosumers version) and the Platinium strings (top notch quality) The first 2 contain also percussion & brass instruments.

I used some downloadable soundfonts to recreate the strings quite convincingly. I will have to post them when I get home tonite..
