I don't know from REX THE DOG. But if the Vangelis/Jarre sound appeals to you, Arturia also makes the CS80 V (as well as the aforementioned Moog emulators).
CS80 V is a very nice-sounding emulation of a classic hundred-kilogram, easily-detuned, bristling-with-controls polyphonic monster synth from Yamahamahamaha. I've seen it called "Japan's first great synthesizer" on one of the big synth-museum websites. (ah -- it's Vintage Synth Explorer.)
If you have a MIDI ribbon controller you'll be in the catbird seat for sure. If you're even more fortunate and own a MIDI keyboard with per-key aftertouch, you'll find yourself atop a virtual volcano of rich, luscious eighties sound.
Not free by a long shot, but it's worth the price IMO.

hyperbole? what, li'l ol' meeee? :-D

CS-80V is a beast! Funny thing, last week I was considering selling it, since I hadn't used it for months, so I started fiddling with it for a while, just to make sure it doesn't inspire me anymore. All of a sudden, I ended up with one of my best tracks to date - CS-80V is a keeper!!!

Btw. Rex The Dog themselves used a Korg 700S for their tracks...

...so I guess the Korg Legacy wouldn't be the worst choice. Everything but free though.
