OK,

As most of you know, I'm a dance/electronica f**kwit. So what is this 'hoover' sound that people refer to? Is it a particular synth patch? A technique? What is a pop song that contains it? Any references to more obscure artists will be sheepishly ignored, not because I'm an ass (though I am) but because I couldn't be arsed researching. I just want to know a very common, easy-to-remember song that was big in North America that features this sound so that once and for all I can know what it is. :D

The Hoover sound is a very cool rugged sounding trance lead preset that resembles a revving up noise, the Hoover vacuum just plain sucks...

Hey, my lemon snow-cone tastes funny!!!

Not only is it a brand of vacuum cleaner, it's also a specific sound :P Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music has a "hoover" sample on the intro page, just click the button ... :)

Bah! Demo software! :D Thanks for the suggestion, actually. No better way to find out than to actually use it...

Still open to any suggestions, though. Is it the sound like in Kalis' "Milkshake"?

Ah, my first reply came before this post. Thanks for that!

Hey, cool site, too. I like the genrefication of it all, and the clickable buttons to hear examples of the 'choons'.

The original "hoover" sound comes from a patch called "What the..." on both the Roland Alpha Juno 1 and the MKS-50 (rackmount version of the AJ1).

I happen to own the second of those two hardware units, and you need to tweak the original patch in order to get it to behave properly, and thus sound like what everyone goes nuts for... :hihi:

It is really quite popular in UK hardhouse and NU-NRG genres, but in my opinion it has long since overstayed its welcome. Time for a new sound!! :D

its a sound that third-rate musos still think is worth using

Either that Joey Beltram Alpha Juno patch (as first heard on 'Mentasm'), or something for cleaning the carpet I believe.
