I had almost forgotten about Kristal, another free piece of recording software. I haven't done much research into it though.

I currently have Tracktion. Any advantages of downloading Kristal...? A step up or a step down or a totally different beast?

Kristal 2 should be coming out soon, it looks promising. There is some info here:

Kristal can't host vst instruments, it does effects though. Kristal doesn't have any midi but thats coming with Kristal 2, it is a nice program though easy to use and all that.

I like Kristal for multi-track mixing and a bit of arranging (if needed)

It has a clean interface and is easy to use (and free!!)

Version 2 looks very interesting 8)

I hope version 2 is still free.... 8)

It's a cool app, and I'm thankful they made it; however, it doesn't do anything that can't already be done in Tracktion, that I'm aware of. I didn't like the workflow, either.

it will also support virtual instruments too..

and it looks like its going to be a commercial venture this time.. though the forum thread (linked here) says he (matthias - the dev of kristal) will have a free version for private use will probably be released too.
