From what I understand, the software update is free for current St2 users. You'll just download the new version online..
However, if you also want the new sounds, then you would have to pay a fee for those. A price has not yet been announced.

"The sounds included in SampleTank® 2.1 have been updated and now include a 2DVD sample set with a variety of quality instruments covering a wide
range of nearly every type of sample. These updates, along with great features like its ease of use, 16 multitimbral parts, 32 built-in multieffects, AmpliTube® and T-RackS® DSP inside, loop-sync, zone and more, have contributed to establishing SampleTank® 2 as the standard sound system for thousands of musicians worldwide.
SampleTank® 2.1 will be available by the Spring 2005. All existing SampleTank® 2
XL users will be qualified for a free upgrade."

Well, even if the DVD's end up being free, surely we will be charged at least a shipping and handling fee ... let's wait and see what Squids says about this..

I am still confused I think.
2.1 is just the engine right?
2.1 is just the engine right?

It will be interesting to see what squids has to say about this one. I am not short of sounds, but there really are some in Sampletank 2 that are not up to the standards of SS2. I am sure squids knows this, and wants Sampletank 2 to be as acclaimed for it's sounds as it is for engine. He also is obviously aware of the value of happy customers.
The press release is not vague. It clearly states that the engine and sounds have both been updated, and that previous owners are entitled to the free update. We'll have to see.

If this free upgrade turns out to be a bunch of BS then I might just not bother upgrading at all, and might save up for that lovely Garritan Big Band & Jazz. I'll get it anyway, but if I have to pay for updated/fixed sounds for my ST2XL I might just get it even quicker.
I agree with harmony gardens on this one, some of the sounds just didn't cut it, some of them were sampled poorly or were set up poorly. And after paying $375 for this plugin recently, the only excuse I'm going to accept is a free update with improved sounds.
If not, I'll be sure to go elsewhere.

As I said, if I have to fork out one more penny for this (with exception to shipping costs) then I'm going to kiss this thing goodbye. For starters, many of the sounds have faults or are unusable, and I would hope that they've been updated and corrected.
If the updated sound library is free to existing ST2XL users, then the $375 I spent on it would be well justified.
But if I have to shell out another $100 or so just to get the updated sound variety/quality (which arguably should have already been in ST2XL in the first place), then that $375 was really not worth it.
Free upgrade for ST2XL users...proof is in the pudding...in other words, WE'LL SEE.

A few of them. Expression Tenor Saxophone has one note where the reed was bitten too much, either D4 or D5 I think - one note ruined the whole thing, the note had inconsistent intonation with other notes.
There are also some others.

Well that's a total of one that you listed.benjamind wrote:A few of them... Expression Tenor

Why not just edit the patch to either not include that note then stretch one of the other waveforms up or down?benjamind wrote:Expression Tenor Saxophone has one note where the reed was bitten too much, either D4 or D5 I think - one note ruined the whole thing
Sorry, I just think that it's a bit rediculous to go stating that "many of the sounds have faults or are usuable" because a couple slipped through with bugs when they were updated from ST1 to ST2!
As to their usefullness that is entirely subjective based upon the sounds you like and the music you make. I may not find a particular sound useful but for someone else it may be perfect for what they want to do.
I find it hard to belive that in all the GB of material that there is not something good in there even though every sound might not be you cup of tea!
BTW have you DL the sounds update from the IK page?
