I am looking for something that will turn my Vintaudio Electrics into heavy lead guitar heaven, perhaps the California sound (I think).

For example, which is better (I know everyone hates that question), Tubebaby or MDA (the latter got a nice write up in Electronic Musician magazine. Or is there something else I never heard of.

They all have their uses. Unlike commercial packages, most freeware tends to be more 'niche'. Simulanalog Guitar Suite, for example, features a JCM900, a Twin, and some stompboxes.

I say, use'em all. :D For the kind of music you mentioned, Simulanalog sounds like the one, though it's been a while since I looked at Cortex/guitifier.

Yeah, I think the JCM900 will get me the sound I am looking for.

All the above, plus x-amp is pretty cool too.

Cool!

This is one case where I think I can do just fine with a freebie.

That hotlink won't work, either-- they use some sort of forwarding system. So, to the next people who want to try: just manually click the 'downloads' button from the above link. Cheers, Donks.

Ditto ... Absolutely spot on..

Its seems that SimaulAnalog suite does not function correctly in Sonar with the Sonar (formerly FXpansion wrapper). It has something to do with the way the channel are set up on separate stereo channels. Can someone confirm this?

For a heavy Marshall sound, do you thing the Cortex is the next best freebie?
