What piece of music got you ...

Into bass guitar?

'Peaches' - The Stranglers. Still a great riff. You know what it is after the first 3 notes. Dirty sound too!

Into synth bass?

Cutting through the opening wash chords - C, C# D ......D,D,D,D, (low octave). 'West End Girls' - Pet Shop Boys. I was like, WOW, synth bass really CAN be as cool as real bass.

Into guitar music?

Never been a big guitar fan, until I heard, 'William It Was Really Nothing', and realised that it was the musicans, not the instrument, that had failed me in the past. In fact to this day, only J Marr interests me as a guitarist. (That's a personal view, don't start throwing bloody Steve Vai at me, ok!)

Into synths?

'Down In The Park' - Gazza Numan. Chilling and beautiful, Moog heaven.

Into drum machines?

'Hiroshima Mon Amour' - Ultravox! Hypnotic underlay to a great song. Dunno what box it was though.

Into brass?

'Reward' -Teardrop Explodes. Before that, I thought trumpets were for swing bands and James Brown.

into narcotics? (optional of course)

'Meninblack' - The Stranglers. The first concept album I was, erm, 'aware' of 8)

Into bass guitar?

Les Claypool of Primus fame. But before that, I was already into slap bass because of various Japanese animation soundtracks like Bubble Gum Crisis, Megazone 23 part 1&2, Kimagure Orange Road..etc.

Into synth bass?

Japanese animation soundtracks from the 80's like Bubble Gum Crisis, A Wing of Honneamise, Megazone 23 part 1&2..etc, synth pop/industrial music in the 80's like Depeche Mode, New Order, Front 242, NIN..etc, and Japanese pop music like Nakayama Miho's Catch The Nite album--which has some of the most kickass synth bass I've ever heard.

Into guitar music?

The Megazone 23 part 1&2 soundtracks turned me onto hard rock guitars, the Macross Soundtracks turned me to onto jazz and fusion guitars, Japanese rock band Boowy turned me onto good ol' rock and roll guitars, The Sundays and The Smiths turned me onto folky strumming acoustic guitars. The Edge of U2 really impressed the hell outta me too with his rhythm guitar technique. Actually, the one incident that got me to really want to master the guitar was when I watched a concert by a Japanese rock band called Anzen Chitai--this guy was playing a really rhythmic strumming part--with lots of muted passages that sounded very percussive. I saw that I said, "OMIFUCKINGOD I want to learn how to do that!" I then proceeded to ask every musician I know to teach me. That's when I got serious about guitar.

Into synths?

Japanese animation soundtracks (like the ones already mentioned), Japanese pop music, synth pop/industrial music like Depeche Mode, New Order, Sakamoto Ryuichi, 808 State..etc. ..etc.

Into drum machines?

Same as above.

Into brass?

Oingo Boingo--lots of really energetic brass in their songs. Morikawa Miho's albums--just about all of them. Awesome latin-influenced pop with awesome brass arrangements.

into narcotics? (optional of course)

I only smoked pot a few times in my life, and I couldn't get high no matter what I did, until the last time I tried it--I was so high that you'd have needed a spaceship to bring me back down. And just about everytime I smoked pot was because some chick wanted me to get high with her--usually someone I was dating.
