If you had to pick 10 pieces of software to make an album with, which ones would they be and why?
these could be any price, but I hope you would pick one best item for one job, and not like "logic, because it has everything that is needed, built in"
what I'm trying to get at is which instruments, host, compressor, eq, echo, audio editor, sample library, etc etc you consider essential.

It would really depend on what type of music you are into, i like z3ta+, other people hate it because its a truly sythetic sound. If you are up to 'Aphex Twin or Squarepusher you would need a lot of different effects (which are mostly freeware).
Anyway, here is my personal -GENERIC- list which is my basic package (i all bought them too):
-01 VSTi: LinPlug IV
-02 VSTi: MusicLab Realguitar
-03 VSTi: RcgAudio z3ta+
-04 VSTi: RcgAudio Pentagon I
-05 VSTi: Garritan Personal Orchestra
-06 VST: ElementAudio Eqium (best Equalizer around)
-07 VST: SilverSpike R2 (Great Reverb, Flexible)
-08 VST: 4Front Mastering Bundle
-09 VST: PSP Vintagewarmer
-10 VST: PSP Nitro

VitaminD: just because someone is using the same tools as you doesn't mean your identity is stolen. If someone sounds the same as you, you're obviously not unique enough
In fact listen to C64-SID sounds and they all sound different and that only by 3 voices, 4 different waveforms and simple ADSR, 1 Filter.

HOST:
ORION Platinum because its the easiest, most intuitive music production environment outside a real studio and it has 90% of everything I need built-in. [sorry, but a fact's a fact]. Almost all the effects I use are there - Platinum Reverb, Diffuse Delay, 2-Band Distortion, Tube Distortion, compressor, filters, etc. It also has a very flexible sampler with loads of features including a built-in loop-slicer, my favourite V/A synth [WaspXT], a wave-morphing synth, a wavetable synth and a bunch of other instruments, any of which would require considerable expenditure to replace with a plugin.
INSTRUMENTS:
JX Synth - fattest oscillators around and an awesome Unison mode.
LOVEkILLER - I just love the sound of SE's Phase Distortion oscillator.
kARMAkILLER - all-purpose V/A synth with useful features.
JOYkILLER - It doesn't do much but it has great PWM on the 3rd party oscillators.
PlastiCZ! - I don't use it any more but it is on one track on the new album.
Synth 1 - Same deal.
EFFECTS:
Kjaerhus Classic collection - really handy Chorus, Phaser, Auto-Filter, etc.
AUDIO EDITOR:
Cool Edit 2000 / Adobe Audition - I also have the Mixer plugin for doing multi-track work.
That's only 9 but it's every single thing that we have used to finish our new album, excluding PC, microphone and His Master's Voice.

(I make pure electronic music)
1-Buzz (free) -does a lot!
2-sound forge or wavelab
3-reaktor !!! -covers most things.
4-waves (at least the C4 and L2) or maybe Ozone
5-Ohm boyz or a PSP lexicon delay
6-Tracktion (free kind of) or XT or FL5
7-SIR (free) or Reverb of choice
8-Orange vocoder
9-A good filter; I use Reaktor's but I hear nitro is good as is Ohm force Quad Fromage
10-MDA pack (free)
I do the step sequencing and hard sample playing in Buzz. i make and edit samples in an editor such as sound forge. I need a visual sequecer such as tracktion to lay out the big audio samples, the buzz tracks and slice, reverse, tweak points play the effects, master etc.
I boil down just about any effect I need as either a filter, delay (this is delay, choirus, falnge), an fft, or dynamic. Ok that means EQ is a filter, reverb is a filtered series of delays. I can do most of this with Reaktor. Some plugs have their own sound and ft effects are not easy in Reaktor so, vocoder, and SIR. Looking back I guess I missed distortion. but lets face it, if you get Buzz you have just about every effct, Reaktor too, and MDA has a bunch, as does Track or FL.

Tracktion (2)
Reason 2.5
energyXT
RGC:audio SFZ
Kjaerhus GPP-1
impOSCar
Ambience
Classic Delay
Classic Auto-Filter
Kjaerhus GCO-1
Not necessarily in that order
By the way, anyone listing the entire Classic Series as one plugin is cheating.

If someone gave me a challenge to complete a whole album with only 10 pieces of software I'd respond thusly:
Host:
EnergyXT
Instruments:
Sonic Synth 2
WusikStation
Crystal
VSampler 3.5
Effects:
None
Audio Editor:
Cool Edit 2000 (or Audition)
Platform Software:
Scope Fusion version 4.
That's less than 10, but Scope Fusion software has all the effects and any of the synth instruments I need. I prefer using VST samplers and sample-based instruments though.

So I should have just listed Classic Chorus as its the only one I use. But seeing that the're free, I thought I'd splurge on the whole set anyway.Warmonger wrote:By the way, anyone listing the entire Classic Series as one plugin is cheating.

I just listed them separately because I couldn't get up to 10 very easily.
