Why does KVR get so much more traffic?

What is it about the KVR forums that make them so dynamic.. I presume that a lot of the same people on this forum are on others as well but the traffic on the others seems so much more fragmented.. As a practical example I notice that Kriminal had posted the Karnage announcement on KVR, The CM forum and patcharena (perhaps others but these were the ones I noticed). I also posted a heads up on the FLStudio forum..
The number of views and/or replies on the other forums was next to nothing.. On KVR, 4700+ views and 109 replies, and this is before its even released.
I would be interested in your opinions on why KVR seems to get so much more traffic, is it because its topic of interest is much more clearly defined rather than the other forums which seek to cover all areas..

Hmm. Interesting question
I´m not sure why it is like that, but myself i visit kvr about 20+ times each day (this site is so addictive)
I visit the other sites about 10-15 times a week.

Yes, sometimes when I am at work I find myself neglecting stuff that I really need to do just to check on the latest response to some obscure question that doesn't even concern me directly, like why Steinberg "Sucks", or which is the best impossibly expensive sample package.
Lets face it: KVR is just plain COOL!
There are X factors at work here. Interesting things, X factors. Virginia Postrel writes about them a lot. Her stuff can be found at: dynamist.com

I believe its because this site is regarded as the 'hub' of all things VST. It doesn't specialise in any one area or endorse any particular manufacturers.
Neither does it have any direct competition on the web, which is something I've noticed.
I reckon it would be interesting to see how a rival would do things.. It would have to be a bit special however, as it this place is used by, referred to and browsed by the whole industry....
Cubase.net is a very busy place too but is obviously more centered around Steinberg users.

The most important factor is that KvR is (as is widely recognised) the most complete and important place to find information about making music on computers. There is enough for newbees and for experts. That is bringing in readers from everywhere. There are a fair amount of mature people posting here. Experts feel comfortable replying to questions as they do not have to worry about replies like "hey dude, wats up - you sux" and shit like that.
The comunity has grown far beyond just an place for information. It has become a place for friendships to form.
The number of developers here makes it a great place too as these people, like yourself, is becomming more than just a program, but rather becomes people.
The music is great and the competition is a place of learning. I have been using KvR lately as a place to test my experiements. Some experiements I have posted at other places got very strange responses. The people here understands what I am trying to do when I say what I am trying and they give honest and great advice.
And yes, we have vurt and Remco.

An incident that I had with Limelight Solo comes to mind.
Limelight Solo is a stand alone version of the Reaktor .ens that was given away with Computer Music. I had a question to ask about it, so posted it in the correct forum on the CM/FM forums. 6 views in a week, and no replies
Posted it here, and got a reply (thanks once again to Scott Solida!!) the same day, and other replies about the software.
Yup, wanna ask a question about some software, dont do it on the proper forum, ask here!! (unless their actual forum is here, of course)
(BTW Scott did mention that he didnt see the post on the CM/FM forum, but saw it here pretty much as soon as I posted. Tells you something about this site, doesnt it??)

I think the feature allowing you to see the top 50 (or more) posts in all categories is crucial. I am not aware if other sites have this feature (maybe they do), but I am addicted to checking it all the time.I believe its because this site is regarded as the 'hub' of all things VST. I'm sure that is important to many, but I rarely use it. However that is changing, now that company forums aren't listed on the front page.jeffn1 wrote: I think the feature allowing you to see the top 50 (or more) posts in all categories is crucial. One of the things that made KvR what it is today was being the first vst newsdesk/forum website ever.
Back then it was a NEW THING
Back when plugs were totally new and Rebirth was the only decent techno composition tool, there was nothing except darkness or KvR.
At that time, KvR was still only one forum. In fact, there was quite a big debate as to whether it should be split into two forums - Instruments and Effects
Well, Ben was feeling progressive and he split the original KvR forum into two
What we also saw was that with the users and the downloaders, devs turned up. People like Angus Hewlett, Mike Kleps and Pete Linsener appeared. They were all broke programmers with big dreams. KvR obviously offered them something (Lots of other devs too, but can't mention you all, can we, bram
)
And the situation changed.
Users could now actually talk to manufacturers which in music was pretty well unheard of. Usually we all simply sat and simpered until Yamaha or Korg pissed on us from a great height.
Devs. Cool. This was another NEW THING
Another driver was the amount of new plugs emerging.
There was always something to talk about, opinions to compare and such.
And by comparison with hardware, plugs were dirt cheap, so we could all afford them
The final driver was the list of freebie downloads that Ben put together.
Everybody wanted the free stuff even if they didn't want to chat.
So we got regular lurker-downloaders, who after watching the forums for a while (which had grown to four or five by now), finally took the plunge and posted something.
People who had never opened their mouths began to speak out. They took the risk.
Another NEW THING
So far so good. There we had an emerging bunch of forums, light years ahead of anything else.
It was then that the characters started to emerge.
Somewhere early on, a bloke called Donkey Tugger appeared and took the piss out of a German bloke called putte by calling him a hun.
This was unheard of. It was racism
But it was genuinely funny and friendly, and putte thought so too (did he revel in the attention? We'll never really know
)
Suddenly a line had been crossed. Funny and friendly meant that political correctness could go f**k itself. We all thought this was utterly brilliant.
It was okay to slag the other guy if you did it in the right spirit.
Of course, in life this is really nothing new, but for the web it was another NEW THING
It also turned out that the said tugger and hun were also damn fine musicians, which helped enormously.
It was incidents like this early on like this that set KvR apart from anything anywhere.
It meant ppl could come here for a laugh, even if they couldn't play for toffee
And more characters started to emerge, all musos like you and me.
Krim, with his ascerbic comments and hard looping synths.
Scot S with his skills and opinions
Caleb flying the flag for lost causes, or BlueDad for writing in every day, or Rabbyt with his quotes.
Even vurt turned up (but only after a while, and after KvR was a done deal
)
Squids the amusing salesman who prefers a paragraph to a sentence, and an essay to a paragraph.
The upshot of it all was that no other site could even remotely keep up.
People tried to copy KvR but ....
The moral of the story is that if you've a great new idea, then be first.
And if you've read this far and I've missed something, then please add it to the thread.
