Logic and Roland JV-2080; can't record sounds

Hi. I know this falls more into a technical matter than the usual topics posted here, but the Logic manuel doesn't exactly make for easy reading!

I'm trying to use Logic Pro 7 with a Roland JV-2080. This setup is completely new to me. Experimenting, I've found it seems to work when I create a Mapped Instrument in the arrange window, and write the notes on there, to play through the 2080. - Is this correct, or is there a better way to get the sounds out?

Now my main problem; I'm trying to record this sound into an audio track as an aif (or wav) file. But, I can't get it to work; I can't tell where the sound is being output; it doesn't seem to be comming from Output 1-2, or from any Bus. The sound plays fine through the speakers, but nothing gets recorded, and I get an error message saying "Read/write permission doesn't allow writing, result code -61".

Does anyone know what I should do to record my track being played by the 2080?

Thanks a lot!

This means you're recording MIDI notes which, by themselves, don't make any sound.

MIDI data is going from Logic to the JV and triggering sounds, which come out of the JV's audio outputs.

What is the JV-2080 audio out plugged into..?

If it's connected to your computer's soundcard input then you should be able to record that on an audio track.

Also, a "Multi Instrument" would be better than a "Mapped Instrument". You should make one in the environment and use that.

I don't know about the error message... Sorry.

Ok, I'll try that, thanks.

I doubt the problem is restricted to the Roland; it's more an issue with Logic and any outboard gear, so if anyone else has any sugestions, I'd really appreciate it!

I doubt there's a problem with any of the gear as such, it's probably got something to do with how it's set up.

I use Logic with external MIDI hardware and have no problems at all, so I can assure you it will work. In fact, Logic is probably the best choice of sequencer to use with external MIDI gear because of its extremely flexible environment.

If you give me some more details about your setup I might be able to pin down the problem for you.

Tell me...

How many audio inputs/outputs are on your soundcard?

How many MIDI inputs/outputs too?

What soundcard driver are you using..? ASIO..? (please say yes to this one)

What are you using for monitoring..? Computer speakers, Hi Fi, separate mixer, amp and studio monitors, or something else..?

Do you have any other MIDI hardware that you would like to connect to your computer..?

And finally, are you using a MIDI keyboard..?

No, I'm sure everything is working right and probably setup properly, - it's just me inability to use it!

I've been trying again to record sounds from the Roland;. I'm now using them on a multi-instrument in the asrrange window, and the midi data plays fine through the Roland, but I can't record or bounce it into an audio track, and no Output is registered.

I can bounce (but not record it seems) from an Audio Instrument playing a sound from EXS24, but not from the Multi-Instrument line.

Maybe it's cause I haven't setup the multi-instrument properly in the Enviroment window?? - Is there anything special you need to do to it once you've created a new Multi-Instrument?

It's not my studio, so I'm really not that familiar with everything, but it's quite a good studio; there is a MIDI keyboard (that Im not using), an Akai, bid studio speakers etc.

I doubt my problem is specific to the Roland; it's more an issue with Logic and any outboard gear, so if anyone can help me (read original mesage above), I'd really appreciate it!!

there is no 'problem' at all, except that you just need to learn the idea behind signal routing in Logic. I do just this all the time with my MOTIF Rack. And I also did it with my JV-1000, so no, there's no 'problem' specific to the Roland either, unless its broken.

Anyway, Logic is sending MIDI notes into the JV. The JV generates audio. In other words if you send a C3, you'll hear a C3 come out of your speakers? I assume you have the JV hooked up into a mixer or something, so that you can hear the JV?

Whatever the case, you need to hook the audio output of the JV into the audio input of the soundcard. Then you can do all sorts of fancy stuff with the JV's audio output. The specifics will, of course, depend on your system.
